Long stormy spring-time, wet contentious April, winter chilling the lap of very May; but at length, the season of summer does come.
Thomas Carlyle
Thomas Carlye lived a long time ago (1795 – 1881) but he could have been around today judging by this observation. While not exactly stormy, spring this year has definitely been wet and quite often cooler than normal. Yes, there have been odd days when it felt like winter was well behind us, with warm sunshine giving us all a lift. But within a couple of days the clouds had descended, the thermometer dropped, and the rain returned.
A welcome break for us was our long weekend in Cagliari, Sardinia. We soaked up some sun (although the evenings were chilly thanks to a brisk wind, the Mistral), ate delicious food and learned something of this island’s fascinating history. There will be posts to come on our explorations there but I’ve dropped a few ‘taster’ shots into the slideshow below.
Apart from that it was a relatively quiet month. I met up for dinner with a Virtual Tourist friend visiting London from Florida, along with his lovely wife and daughter. The following day more Virtual Tourist friends were in London, visiting just from Yorkshire. We spent a great day together exploring Rotherhithe, visiting the Photographers’ Gallery, and taking street photos in Soho. I also lucked out with a visit to a bluebell wood with friends from my photography group, which coincided with the one proper spring weekend of the month. I’ve already posted about that here but had to include a couple of photos in this round-up, among them my featured shot.
Technical notes
Most of these shots were taken with my compact Panasonic Lumix, including those in Sardinia, Rotherhithe and Soho. Those in Ealing were taken with my phone, as was the first one in London. And I used my Panasonic bridge camera on the bluebell woods shoot. Most have been at least a little edited with Photoshop Elements and some more heavily edited with Nik Color Efex.
As always I am linking my selection to Ju-Lyn’s and Brian’s Changing Seasons challenge. Use the arrows to navigate the slideshow if you want to see all the images.

Looking forward to seeing your upcoming posts on Sardinia, an island I know nothing about, Sarah! That’s part of the joy of reading other blogs, isn’t it?
Sarah Wilkie
Yes, definitely – although it does mean my travel wish-list keeps growing faster than I can tick places off!

Of course, street art always grabs me – I’d love to see the Banksy’s in London! And all the flowers are beautiful, especially touching for me since it’s snowing outside my window, not too hard but a mountain spring snow. At this time of year, I go down the hill to Denver to see flowers.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks Ruth 😀 I’d struggle with snow at this time of year – I don’t even like itin January!

Yeah, at least we don’t have summer heat, that’s when we have perfect weather. And we seldom have rain and no humidity. It’s a trade-off!
Sarah Wilkie
Very true, your summers must be lovely!

It certainly doesn’t look like the chilly spring has deprived you of the opportunity to take beautiful photos. The photo of the flamingo is a stunner – the pink beak, legs and few feathers are lovely. And I always love your flower pictures — especially the pelargonium (and that in your own garden).
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you 😊 I loved seeing the flamingos there, although only a few were close enough for decent photos.
Travel with a Pen
Quick jaunts over long weekends are my favourites. Looks like you had a great time in Sardina! Love the photos!
Sarah Wilkie
I enjoy our longer trips but short breaks in between are also fun! Sardinia was lovely, I’m pleased you liked the photos 😀
grandmisadventures
great collection of pictures. I really love the Princess Diana/Mary Poppins picture 🙂
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you 🙂 Yes, that’s a clever bit of street art!
Alison
The photos won’t show on my iPad so will have to check on my phone! My iPad is the worst for commenting as well.
Sarah Wilkie
That’s annoying for you. A few months ago I swapped from one slideshow format to this because people couldn’t see the photos, but it seems that although this one is better it isn’t perfect 🙁
Alison
Whenever I look at emails from bloggers I always have to sign in each time when I’m on my ipad as well.
Sarah Wilkie
Irritating!

A great month Sarah. I love the chain and Flamingo best as well as flowers flowers.
Thanks for joining in The Changing Seasons 😀
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Brian, glad you enjoyed my selection 😀
Monkey's Tale
He looks lonelier in B&W but I still love the picture. Looks like a good April despite the weather. Maggie
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Maggie 🙂 That’s an interesting observation and I think I agree with you!

Liking the Mary Poppins mural. I’d like to see Sardinia again too, before too long, I really liked it, as I said the other day. Your April wasn’t too bad despite the slow to move weather…
Sarah Wilkie
Yes, it was a good month despite the disappointing weather. Mary Poppins is just off Monmouth Street 😀
Amy
Picturesque! Looking forward to seeing more of Sardinia through your lens. 🙂
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Amy, I’m looking forward to sharing more of Sardinia soon!

A beautiful presentation, Sarah. Your lead photo is whimsical.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you 🙂
Sue
Great selection – I like the old chain at Rotherhithe wall, and am looking forward to more images from Sardinia, a place I sadly never got to.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Sue 😀 Lots more on Sardinia to come, of course!
Marie
We haven’t been to Sardinia although I’ve thought about it – so it was warm enough in April?
Sarah Wilkie
Warm during the day (low 20s and largely sunny) but a fresh wind that felt rather chilly at night.
Marie
Once there’s a few hours of heat during the day…. I seem to be seeking out sun and heat more and more these days….
Rose
The weather has been similar here as most of April was cloudy, rainy, and cool. All your flowers do a good job of making up for the dreary skies.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Rose 😀 I know we aren’t alone in having a poor spring.

It’s fun when you can meet up with virtual friends from other countries and nearby.
Sarah Wilkie
Indeed – although despite meeting through ‘Virtual Tourist’ my Yorkshire friends are very definitely no longer virtual as we’ve met in person numerous times now 😀

You’ve had quite a busy month. I look forward to more of your Sardinia photos. The ones you show here whet the appetite.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Margaret 🙂 Sardinia was great, there’ll definitely be more photos to come!
