Itโs Pick a Word time again. Another month and another set of five words from Paula to illustrate. Always challenging, always fun! And as always I've trawled my archives to find some words that I hope fit her choices.

Irving Penn defined a good photograph as, 'one that communicates a fact, touches the heart and leaves the viewer a changed person for having seen it'. If I can do even one of those three things with an image, Iโm satisfied!
-
Jean De La Bruyere, French philosopher, said that, 'We come too late to say anything which has not been said already', but I am hopeful that I am better late than never.
-
'When words become unclear, I shall focus with photographs. When images become inadequate, I shall be content with silence.' I find it hard to believe that I havenโt used that quote from Ansel Adams before!

Sometimes a few words can enhance a viewerโs understanding of an image. After all, what else are captions for if not to explain?

What is a good word? Is it a word that has a positive impact, which Iโm sure was Herbertโs definition of the phrase? Or is it simply a word we like, one that is pleasing for its meaning, its sound or both?

How often have you gazed at a stunning landscape, pulled out the camera to capture its beauty, and been disappointed with the results? All too frequently, flat lighting and dull weather can make the scene look so much less inspiring to the camera lens than it did to your eyes.

Whoever came up first with that saying โa picture is worth a thousand wordsโ didnโt understand the first thing about either one. (Wim Wenders)

While a photo can tell a story without the need for words, and words can do likewise without any illustration, the combination of both can be more powerful than either. Each month Paula challenges us to find photos to match her chosen words. Some seem easy to โillustrateโ, others I genuinely find challenging. But itโs an exercise I always enjoy!

I think we all hope our words will mean something, and many of us hope that our photographs will too. Paulaโs Pick a Word challenge gives us a chance each month to consider her words and pair them with our photos.
