Exploring Port Sunlight: a visionary idea

    July 27, 2026 / 43 Comments

In 1888 William Hesketh Lever, owner of the Sunlight Soap factory on England’s Wirral Peninsula, founded a village to house his workers. He based it on some innovative principles for his time (and perhaps they also seem quite radical still today?) His vision was to provide his workers with decent, sanitary housing in a considered architectural and picturesque form.

Another side (or sides) to Pest

    July 21, 2026 / 53 Comments

One morning in Budapest we spent wandering the city’s Jewish Quarter. In the early 2000s this area underwent a revival, with the famous ruin bars springing up in courtyards of buildings slated for demolition and a mixed community moving into the area to open shops and restaurants, create art or simply to live.

Gallery: let there be light in Budapest!

    July 10, 2026 / 44 Comments

When I spotted the Light Art Museum on the map, a short walk from the apartment we were renting, it quickly rose to one of our must-see sights. The museum is 'one of the first exhibition spaces in the world to specialise specifically in the collection ... and display of works of this character.'

A postcard from Liverpool: Another Place

    May 18, 2026 / 36 Comments

On Crosby beach north of Liverpool 100 cast-iron, life-size figures stand looking out to sea. The figures each weigh 650 kilos and are made from casts of the artist Anthony Gormley’s own body.

    Along the Regents Canal

    April 7, 2026 / 45 Comments

The Regents Canal links the Grand Union Canal in Paddington with the Thames in east London, via the Limehouse Basin. It is 8.6 miles (13.8 kilometres) long and like most canals has a towpath. These towpaths were originally used by horses to pull barges but today are popular places for walking, jogging and cycling (where wide enough).

    Exploring Doha’s Katara Cultural Village

    March 10, 2026 / 31 Comments

Katara Cultural Village was constructed on reclaimed land along Doha's coastline as a centre for culture and the arts. It takes its name from the original one for this region, Catara, the first record of which appears in Ptolemy’s Geography, written c. 150 A.D.

Gallery: seeing Doha in black and white

    March 4, 2026 / 47 Comments

There is a temptation while travelling to take only those ‘souvenir’ photos, and it’s one I often fall into. It’s all too easy simply to point the camera at them and press the shutter while considering only the basics of composition. At the same time I do try to look for the more unusual photo opportunities, and I like to capture the details of everyday life in a city.

Two Florentine museums, and a chapel

    December 17, 2025 / 30 Comments

Mention a visit to Florence to anyone and they will likely ask, did you go to the Uffizi? did you visit the Galleria dell’Accademia to see David? With good reason, as they hold a myriad of treasures. But they are not the only great museums in the city, and others come with their own plus points. Less crowded, more intimate and on an easier scale to digest in a single visit.

A short walk between two Florentine piazzas

    December 4, 2025 / 31 Comments

While Florence is a city of big-hitter sights (the Duomo, the Uffizi, the Accademia), it is also a city of winding streets and picturesque piazzas. A city of hidden gems, street art and welcoming bars and cafés. A city of churches, of monuments and markets. In short, it is Italy.

The Basilica di Santa Croce di Firenze

    November 28, 2025 / 47 Comments

On our recent visit we stayed just around the corner from the Piazza di Santa Croce. It became the starting point for several of our walks and the focus of our evening drinking and dining. By day and night the huge basilica, the largest Franciscan church in the world, dominates its eastern side.
