Why then do we feel this strange attraction for these Polar Regions, a feeling so powerful and lasting, that when we return home we forget the mental and physical hardships, and want nothing more than to return to them?
Jean-Baptiste Charcot
A powerful and lasting feeling indeed. Having spent the first half of August on an expedition cruise in Svalbard, I spent much of the second half wanting, like Charcot, to return!
But any return will have to wait, and meanwhile within a week of getting home we were off again, on our annual trip to Yorkshire to meet up with family friends in Grinton, the village where my father in law was evacuated. We stayed in a comfortable Airbnb in Masham and were blessed with good weather. So we took advantage of this to visit two lovely gardens in the area. Firstly, Thorp Perrow Arboretum, where as well as late summer flowers and beautiful trees we enjoyed an owl flying display. And then the Himalayan Garden and Sculpture Park, with a huge collection of sculptures dotted around the beautiful valley gardens.
I will probably share more photos of these gardens one day, perhaps when I’ve worked through the large number I inevitable took in the Arctic, but meanwhile I’ve included some below. I’ve also included a handful of Svalbard shots and a couple from Helsinki where we spent a day on our way home. This should give you a flavour of some of our experiences while waiting for my more comprehensive Arctic diary posts.
Meanwhile at home …
With so much travelling there are, unusually for me, no photos taken closer to home this month. But that doesn’t mean we didn’t get out at all! There was just time between the two trips for a cinema visit to see The Materialists (formulaic but well done), and at the end of the month we also saw The Roses. I’d recommend the latter over the former if I had to pick! I met up with a friend, a former work colleague, for drinks one evening. Finally, I went to an interesting U3A talk about the women widowed by Scott’s failed Antarctic expedition. And so we come full circle to those Polar Regions!
Technical notes
Most of the photos from our Arctic trip were taken on my Panasonic Lumix bridge camera, apart from the first one below and the feature photo which were taken on my other point and shoot Lumix. The Helsinki and Yorkshire shots were also taken with that compact camera.
Most have been at least a little edited with Photoshop Elements and some more heavily edited with Nik Color Efex.
As always I am linking my selection to Ju-Lyn’s and Brian’s Changing Seasons challenge. Use the arrows to navigate the slideshow if you want to see all the images.
My feature photo was taken from a zodiac in Fjortende Julibukta on our Svalbard expedition cruise

What a month of contrast, Sarah! The weather, the scenery, the wildlife … what a time you’ve had!
I love your surreal arctic captures – and those puffins! I love puffins, although I’ve only ever seen them in book, film and photo. I can only imagine how awesome it was to share space with them.
Sarah Wilkie
It was an amazing month Ju-Lyn, thanks to that unforgettable Arctic adventure! The puffins were so cute, yes, the scenery was magnificent and the polar bear was the icing on the cake! Thank you for stopping by 🙂
navasolanature
Really great gallery of photos.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Georgina 😊

The Yorkshire trip must have been a 180-degree change from Svalbard! Steven and I went to movies weekly before COVID. I see that you didn’t give up going as we did after the pandemic. I’d like to have heard the talk you attended.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Annie 😊 Yes, Yorkshire was rather different from Svalbard! We really enjoy our cinema outings and couldn’t wait to get back to them as soon as it was permitted again after Covid.
grandmisadventures
Great pictures all around. I love the polar bear so much. But that eagle owl seems to be a vibe all its own- I can almost hear him saying “seriously?” 🙂
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Meg 😊 It was so special to see that polar bear! I love your interpretation of the owl’s expression 😃
Amy
Wonderful! Thank you for giving us a chance to view this beautiul collection, Sarah!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Amy 😊 I’m glad you enjoyed them – it’s always a pleasure to look back and share the high points of each month!

A wonderful selection of creatures for August!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Nilla, I’m glad you enjoyed seeing them 🙂
Sylvia
Marvelous photos as always, Sarah! Have been to Helsinki but Svalbard has definitely made my bucket list! Kudos, Sylvia
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Sylvia 😊 Svalbard is worth adding to any bucket list, it’s just stunning!

Dear Sarah
All the people I know who visited the High Arctic feel that they have to go there again and again – like us. Unfortunately, Kb is too old now to be taken on an expedition, so he has to choose expedition cruises instead. It’s probably more relaxing.
All the best
The Fab Four of Cley
🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you 🙂 We found the expedition cruise to have just the right blend of excitement and comfort for us at this stage of our lives!
Klausbernd
I suppose that is for us the right blend now too.
We would like to sail the NE Passage. We’ll see …

August was a very good travel month for you, wasn’t it? Of course, your Arctic photos are beautiful … but I had to look twice at that Turkmenian eagle owl – those eyes are exceptional.
Sarah Wilkie
Yes, it was a great month! And I agree about the eagle’s eyes, they’re stunning 😀
Sam Hankss
I can still hear and smell the cacophony of Alkefjellet!! What an experience it is!
Sarah Wilkie
Oh yes, cacophony is just the right word for it! An amazing experience, as was every day on that trip 🙂 Thank you Sam.
Easymalc
A set of great images as always Sarah but my favourites have to be the polar bear and walruses as to see these creatures in the wild must be thrilling.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Malcolm 🙂 Yes, seeing those creatures in the wild really was a thrill, as was the whole trip – I’m still buzzing from it!
Easymalc
I’ll be following it with interest as you know.
Egídio
Truly beautiful, Sarah.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Egidio 🙂
Monkey's Tale
What a great August, puffins, walruses, polar bears! You’ve given us a great selection here. Maggie
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Maggie 🙂 It really was a very special August!

Wow Sarah, you saw Puffins, one of my favourite birds I have never seen, and Walrus and the Owls, so good. Love the kittiwakes/gulls and the other sights around the travels. I did have to smile at the “Stuck in the middle with ewe” I can amuse myself sometimes 😁
Thanks for joining in The Changing Seasons 😀
Sarah Wilkie
Haha, that’s a great caption for the sheep shot Brian, thank you 🤣 I was thrilled to get close to the puffins and the two walrus haul-outs we saw were also highlights of the trip.
the eternal traveller
Nice shot of the puffins. We saw puffins off the coast of Wales but they were black dots in the water, so I’m envious that you got to see them like this. What a treat!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Carol 🙂 We did get reasonably close to the puffins but I have a very good zoom lens (x30) which also helped!
Suzanne@PictureRetirement
Beautiful gallery. The polar bear would have been the highlight of the trip for me. You’ve certainly had a memorable August.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Suzanne 🙂 The polar bear certainly was A highlight, but was one among many!
Alli Templeton
What an amazing August you’ve had, Sarah! The Svalbard shots are all outstanding – the wildlife, scenery, everything. And that Alkefjellet picture is so incredibly atmospheric.
We went to Masham on our break in Yorkshire earlier this year, but I didn’t know about the Himalayan Garden or Thorp Perrow. They both look lovely. But I suppose there’s so much to do up there that you’d need months to do it all, wouldn’t you? 🙂 Oh well, it gives us a good excuse to go back and see some more! I love the kittiwakes too. We spent ages today watching around 40 gannets having a spectacular feeding frenzy in Llandudno and Colwyn bays. It was a stunning sight, as they’re so big and graceful, and when they dive for fish they go down into the sea like jet-propelled darts! You’d have got some wonderful pictures, I’m sure. 🙂
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Alli 😊 We go up to Yorkshire most summers and always find something new to do. I definitely recommend both Thorp Perrow and the Himalayan Garden. We saw loads of kittiwakes in Svalbard and I never tired of photographing them, but no diving gannets!
Alli Templeton
They’re a sight to behold!
Brad M
I enjoyed the puffin portrait.
Anabel @ The Glasgow Gallivanter
I think you already know I am envious of Svalbard! The Himalayan Garden was on our list of potential visits when we were in Yorkshire in July but we couldn’t fit it in. Another time!
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks Anabel 🙂 I definitely recommend the Himalayan Garden. Even on a Bank Holiday weekend it wasn’t too busy and is easily large enough that you can spread out and find areas almost to yourself!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Brad – I was thrilled to see puffins on our trip!
Sue
great set of images Sarah and I’m looking forward to seeing more of the gardens in due course
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Sue – I’ll get around to those garden photos eventually!
Anne Sandler
Nice mixture Sarah! I liked the owls, walrus and polar bear. The gardens were beautiful.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Anne, I’m glad you enjoyed them 🙂
margaret21
You spent most of your Yorkshire visit in ‘my’ part of the county. Such a shame we couldn’t meet! Great owl shots. In fact as ever, a fine collection.
Sarah Wilkie
Yes, we were very near you most days, apart from the one in Grinton. Hopefully we can meet next year, if not in London in the meantime 🙂
margaret21
👍
lisaonthebeach
I just love the seagull photo up top! Beautiful!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Lisa 🙂 They are kittiwakes – really pretty gulls I think!
