I built my house from barley rice
Green pepper walls and water ice
Tables of paper wood, windows of light
And everything emptying into white
Into White, Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens)
There is something ethereal and fascinating about images that lack the colours that we normally relate to the spectrum. Do we even always think of white as a colour, or do we consider it a lack of colour?
It’s a long while since I participated in Debbie’s One Word Sunday challenge, but I do love a colour challenge and this one is a bit different as white can be hard to photograph, I feel. Subjects that are mostly white can fool the meter in your camera. If you aren’t careful you get underexposed shots, or you risk over-compensating and end up with burned-out highlights. But get it right and these white images can be easily as striking as more brightly coloured ones.
And fortunately, if you don’t get it right in camera there are editing tools that can correct wrong exposure to some extent. You can even add that ethereal white on white feel that will make your images stand out despite the lack of colour; indeed, because of that lack of colour.
Here’s a selection of some favourites to illustrate what I mean. I confess to some creative editing to emphasise the effect I wanted to create for this gallery. For example, many of the flowers were edited with Nik Color Efex Pro filters, including soft focus and vignettes.
My feature photo is of a polar bear on the sea ice north of Svalbard. To see captions for the photos below please click on them (this may not work if viewing on a phone)

I loved these, Sarah! I especially liked the hollyhocks photo.

Thank you again 😊 It’s always interesting to hear which photos stand out.

Technically white is the sum of all colours, isn’t it?
Sarah Wilkie
I believe that it is, yes 🙂
grandmisadventures
beautiful pictures- I love bright colors next to white
Sarah Wilkie
Not many bright colours for you here Meg, but I’m glad you liked them – thank you 😊

Definitely ethereal. My friend’s shot of poplar pollen had both texture and this ethereal sense. Think needs a good camera.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much 😊 A good camera definitely helps but you should be able to achieve something similar with a phone and maybe a bit of editing.
navasolanature
Yes, however you seem to also have the eye for a good angle/ shot! I fill my phone with different shots but need to delete more!

Just found my camera, I left it behind, thinking I hadn’t brought it to the UK. Missed some good bird pics that mobile phones do not manage well. But they can do a lot of detail, such amazing technology.
Sarah Wilkie
Glad you found it 😀 You’re right that cameras are often better for wildlife.
Annie Berger
I liked the contrast of the dark bird against the light fixture, Sarah.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks Annie, that struck me too 🙂 And a bit of contrast helps to emphasise the white.

Like everyone, I love the polar bear. We’re going to northern Manitoba this fall to see them. Maggie
Sarah Wilkie
Ooh, that’s going to be wonderful! I look forward to hearing all about it and seeing some photos!
norasphotos4u
These are lovely!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Nora 🙂

Nicely done, especially the bear. I find red a difficult colour to get right too. It never seems to photograph accurately.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you – that bear is definitely the general favourite here 🙂 That’s interesting what you say about red, as I don’t think I have particular problems with it.
Jane Lurie
Excellent collection of whites, Sarah. The polar bear is stellar, and your hollyhock especially caught my eye. 🤍
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Jane 😊 I’m pleased you like those two in particular.

Masterfully done, Sarah! That creamy look is beautiful.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much 😊

Wonderful to see one of your wonderful polar bear shots again.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks Anabel 🙂 It seemed the perfect excuse to share him again!
Rebecca
Love the photo of the icy landscape with the single polar bear blending in the foreground! Really goes to show just how vast and overwhelming this beautiful planet is. Thanks for sharing, Sarah!
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks Rebecca. We’d had an amazing close encounter with that bear, and I took that shot as he was heading back away from our ship.
Sue
Great images, Sarah – some lovely white flowers but of course the favourite has to be the polar bear
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Sue 😊 He does seem to be a general favourite!
Sue
Good! But do we know ‘he’ is he! 😳
Sarah Wilkie
Yes – we were told by expert naturalists on board that this is a young male, probably two or three years old
Sue
Ah! very good
Anne Sandler
Sarah, these are so beautiful. I love the pop of color the pistils give the white in the flowers. Great job.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Anne, I’m really pleased you like them 😊
Yvonne Dumsday
You are correct Sarah. These really are a collection of striking photographs.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks Yvonne, I’m glad you found them so 😊
Rose
So many dreamy white images, Sarah. However the polar bear is quite interesting. I think of polar bears as blending into their frozen backgrounds but this one seems to stand out even though it’s also white…
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Rose 😊 The polar bear was more creamy than pure white, whereas the sea ice was tinged with blue, so a much cooler shade.

Wonderful high key images, with an appropriate quote from the erstwhile Cat Stevens!
I love translating that Hindi for others. On the doors of the shop it says happy/good/holy profit, four times over
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you for that translation I J, it’s good to know what it says 😀 And I’m glad you enjoyed the photos!
wetanddustyroads
I find it difficult to take photos when it’s mostly white, and yet you have proven that it can turn out as such beautiful photos. There is just something special about a pure white flower. Love your feature photo of the polar bear.
Sarah Wilkie
It can be a bit difficult but I have the advantage of those editing tools to help pull off the effect! Thanks Corna 😀

These are all fabuolus, but the Svalbard one has to take the crown, I think. Yes, there’s a lot to be said for shots that showcase tints of a single colour, and this post is a wonderful example of that. You’re taking even more liberties with challenge directives than I do. ‘One Word Sunday’ indeed!
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Margaret 😊 Yes, I know this is taking liberties! Perhaps I should have said ‘inspired by OWS’ rather than a direct response to it 🤔
margaret21
I doubt if you’ll be drummed out of town.
Sarah Wilkie
