A picture is a poem without words
Horace (65 BC – 8 BC)
The Roman poet Horace of course would not have known about photography, living as he did over two thousand years ago. But I’m sure if he had, he would have looked for poems in photos.
I guess Horace was simply pre-empting that favourite saying, ‘a picture paints a thousand words’. That being, I’ll keep this introduction to my April Pick a Word offerings short. Paula as always has challenged us with a mixed set of words, some easier to illustrate than others. And as always, I set myself the challenge of using all five words in this response.
This month’s choices will take you to India, north east England, Colombia, Sofia in Bulgaria, and New York City. Some you will have seen before in other contexts, but they were too good a match not to use again here.
DECOROUS

MONUMENT
Collingwood Monument, Tynemouth, England
Vice Admiral Lord Cuthbert Collingwood was Lord Nelson’s second-in-command at the Battle of Trafalgar. He assumed command of the British fleet after the death of Nelson and led them to victory. Despite playing this critical role in the battle he is disappointingly a lot less well-known than Nelson and is sometimes referred to as the forgotten hero of Trafalgar.
PETALLED
Orchid at Finca Romelia, Manizales, Colombia
The elderly owner of this finca, high in the hills of the central coffee region, has developed a stunning collection of orchids. He has amassed more than 840 species and over 8000 individual plants.
BRIGHT

Bright sunlight through a modern stained glass window illuminates a plain plaster wall
TWILIGHT
View from the Top of Rock, New York City
Staying on after the crowds dispersed from the roof terrace gave us the chance to enjoy the views in peace and quiet as well as capturing scenes of the city as the lights came on.

What an interesting collection of words to illustrate, Sarah, and again you’ve risen to the challenge in style. I love the orchid and it’s story – I had no idea there were so many species! And the stained glass window light is incredible. The sunshine must have been very strong that day to produce that detail and brightness! 🙂
