What is it about doors that so often compels us to photograph them? Is it their ability to spark curiosity, suggesting something hidden just beyond? Or is it more simply their visual appeal, as they are often the most ornate or interesting element of a building?

There are many ways to learn. We can watch someone else and copy (or try to copy) what they do. We can read instructions and guidelines. We can listen while somebody tells us how to do something. Or we can get stuck in, have a go, and learn from our experiments and efforts.

There is something about being amongst trees that speaks to all of us. Our deep-rooted (pun intended) appreciation of them spans cultures, geographies, and histories. Forests appear in the stories and myths of so many cultures, as mysterious places where both danger and magic can be found.

What is better than seeing a beautiful landscape captured in a photograph? Often, seeing the same landscape twice. A still lake, or if we’re lucky a still river, will allow us to double up the scene and often double the beauty. But we aren’t restricted to water when we look for reflective surfaces to enhance our images or give them a different twist.

Whatever the weather, when travelling it would be a waste of a day to stay inside. And with the right clothing it’s always possible to get out and explore. I want to show how bad weather needn't throw you off course when travelling. How with the right attitude and a bit of flexibility, even a stormy day can be fun!

For many of us of a certain age, it’s impossible to hear the word ‘mellow’ without immediately thinking ‘yellow’. Yellow can be rather harsh. But at the paler, creamier end of the spectrum it can be beautifully mellow.

The best travel books should leave you with a desire to visit the places they describe. Experiencing these journeys vicariously is a wonderful way to discover potential destinations, or to see ones you have already visited through fresh eyes. It is also a great way to see how all of us travel in different ways.
