My focus then was on the places where I have enjoyed some serenity while travelling, slowing the pace to enjoy the peace and quiet of different environments. Very many people have had their say about what constitutes creativity. Most focus on a degree of rule-breaking and risk-taking. In this post I want to share some of the creative people I’ve featured previously, bringing examples of their fascinating and unusual work together into this single post.

What is better than seeing a beautiful landscape captured in a photograph? Often, seeing the same landscape twice. A still lake, or if we’re lucky a still river, will allow us to double up the scene and often double the beauty. But we aren’t restricted to water when we look for reflective surfaces to enhance our images or give them a different twist.

Whatever the weather, when travelling it would be a waste of a day to stay inside. And with the right clothing it’s always possible to get out and explore. I want to show how bad weather needn't throw you off course when travelling. How with the right attitude and a bit of flexibility, even a stormy day can be fun!

For many of us of a certain age, it’s impossible to hear the word ‘mellow’ without immediately thinking ‘yellow’. Yellow can be rather harsh. But at the paler, creamier end of the spectrum it can be beautifully mellow.

The best travel books should leave you with a desire to visit the places they describe. Experiencing these journeys vicariously is a wonderful way to discover potential destinations, or to see ones you have already visited through fresh eyes. It is also a great way to see how all of us travel in different ways.

We all need a sense of humour right now. And as photographers we can look for the things that make us laugh through the lens of our cameras. Sometimes you are aware as you take a photo that it shows something amusing. At other times the humour in the shot only strikes you later.

There’s a temptation when we travel to try to cram everything in. To see every sight, explore every street and alleyway, visit every museum even! We fear we’ll go home and regret having missed something that others say is a must-see. Or worse perhaps, miss seeing that one thing that we could have been the first to discover and share.

As children we are taught to follow the rules, whether those set by our parents, our school or society in general. And when we first start to take our photography seriously we discover that there are rules there too. It’s perhaps really only once you have learned these rules and are applying them instinctively that you can also learn when and how to break them.

A still image freezes time for a fraction of a second. Life stands still, and we don’t know what happened next. But a movie, while in reality a fast-changing sequence of still images, shows us life in motion. Is that an easier way to tell a story? Perhaps; however our imaginations alone can often create multiple stories out of a single image.
