I must have flowers, always, and always
Claude Monet
Perhaps Monet should have visited Sri Lanka, where I found flowers aplenty to enjoy and to photograph. After all, he is inextricably linked to waterlilies, is he not, and the country’s national flower is the blue waterlily.
We saw these beautiful flowers everywhere, not just growing in lakes but also as offerings in Buddhist shrines in particular. This flower is considered a symbol of truth, purity and discipline. Despite the name it can also come in shades of violet, purple or pink. The flowers grow on stems that stand above the water level.

Click on any image to see where it was taken. The flowers bottom left were bought by our guide Champi for us to offer at the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, Anuradhapura, and are held by me. Champi himself holds the offerings bottom left, bought at one of the many stalls outside the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy.
Other waterlilies and lotuses
But why stop at blue waterlilies when there are other colours to be enjoyed too? The gallery below includes the colour version of the pink one that I shared in two different mono edits in my last Monochrome Madness post. Again, you can click on any image to see where it was taken.

The simple but lovely Negombo hotel (incongruously named the Swanee Grand), where we stayed both on the night of our arrival and before our flight home, had a pretty garden. While taking photos there I fell into conversation with the owner who was very proud of his waterlily pond. He took me to see where a white lotus bud was half-hidden by leaves. It was almost ready to burst into flower, just as a nearby bloom was fading and dropping its petals.

Other Sri Lankan flowers
And why stop at waterlilies at all? Here is a selection of other flowers I found.

As before, you can click on any of the photos to see where it was taken, and also the name of the flower. Cautionary note: while I know many of these flowers I had to ask Google Lens about a few, so it’s possible one or two names are incorrect. Please do leave a comment if you have a correction for me!
I’m sharing these for Terri’s Flower Hour challenge, especially as it’s been too long since I last took part!

I must say that Jaffna greatly appeals through your Lens, Sarah. I have never been to Sri Lanka, though it is very much on the list. So much colour and your usual eye for intimate people shots remains as strong as ever. You even got a warm smile out of Mr. ‘Life is Good.’ I think I understand your idea of ‘India Lite’ as a positive thing. The closing shot, soft sunset or not, is lovely.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Leighton 😊 If you do get to Sri Lanka I really recommend including the northern part of the island, around Jaffna, to see a different side of it and better understand the past conflicts.
Sylvia
Sarah, you have a great eye for color, composition, and clarity! Love all these beautiful images!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Sylvia 😊

beautiful flowers- I love that bright purple and the bright yellow together!
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks Meg – the colours ARE lovely, I agree!

Such flowers only as the tropics can grow, I guess. I have a particular liking for the frangipani. We had some in the garden in West Africa. Smelled delicious. 🙏🏻
Sarah Wilkie
I always love to see tropical flowers when I travel – they’re part of that sense of being ‘somewhere else’ 🙂 My favourites are bougainvillea and hibiscus but I love frangipani too. I don’t think I’d ever seen a yellow one before this trip.
equinoxio21
Such flowers are clearly “exotic”. Living in Mexico they’re almost day-to-day flowers. We have bougainvillea both at home and at the country house. And copa de oro, which I love.

I love flowers, so I really enjoyed this post. I love the smell of frangipani. My favourite here is the lone pink waterlily that stands so gracefully upright in the water. Lovely post, Sarah.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Corna 🙂 I love frangipani scent too! That lone waterlily is the one I posted in monochrome and in a selective colour version last week, and promised to share the original full colour – I’m glad you like it 🙂

These are lovely. Waterlilies and lotus has always moved me, partly because of the way they float on the water.
Sarah Wilkie
Glad you enjoyed seeing these ones – thank you Ruth 🙂

Becoming a landlubber after 21 years on a boat, I’m amazed at how I’ve taken to gardening. 😉

Your yellow flowering vine (no 10) is an allamanda. 😄 Lesley
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Lesley, duly corrected 🙂 Although Wikipedia seems to reckon that ‘yellow trumpet’ is an alternative name for this particular allamanda??
Diana
Wow, the colors are just stunning!
Sarah Wilkie
Aren’t they just?! Thank you Diana 🙂
Teresa
These are all pretty, Sarah. The water lilies are great. But purple flowers always get me.
Sarah Wilkie
Many thanks Teresa 🙂 I love purple too, as I think you know!
the eternal traveller
So beautiful. Waterlilies always look stunning and you’ve captured them perfectly. I do love frangipanis too although we don’t have one in our garden because we don’t have the space.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Carol 🙂 I agree about frangipanis, they’re such elegant flowers I always think. But I can’t imagine that they would grow in the UK even if we did have the space!
Egídio
OMG! What an outstanding collection!
Sarah Wilkie
Very many thanks Egidio 😊
Monkey's Tale
So beautiful Sarah. I always love the frangiapani, but never knew their name. Maggie
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Maggie 😊 Frangipani are also known as plumeria, but I tend to use the first name myself.
Susanne Swanson
Wow! I love them all, but your feature photo is incredible!
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Susanne 😊 Those blue waterlilies are indeed incredible! I took that photo, like some of the others, at the Mudhouse where they had large vases of fresh ones in various places, so it was easy to get in close for a macro.
restlessjo
Stunning photos of the waterlilies, Sarah. What’s the difference between them and lotus flowers, do you know? I’ve never seen waterlilies on a long stem before. I can hop into Google or wait for Jude to tell us xx
Sarah Wilkie
Many thanks Jo 😊 Jude may correct me, but I believe the difference is that waterlily leaves lie flat on the water (lily pads) while lotus leaves are further up the stem, in dry air. Lotus flowers I think are always on a stem whereas waterlilies can vary.
Terri Webster Schrandt
Oh you’re singing my floral songs with these beauties, Sarah! I’ve never seen waterlilies and the blue ones are stunning! So many other colors, too! I also love the bougainvillea and of course the plumeria! Wow, you hit the jackpot in Sri Lanka and I thank you for taking the time to share and link to my challenge!
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Terri 😊 A return to your lovely challenge was long overdue! Bougainvillea are particular favourites of mine, I can never resist photographing them. But I’m amazed that you’ve never seen waterlilies – really?!!
Terri Webster Schrandt
Our 40 day roadtrip slowed my blog reading down 😬 Suddenly, my WP email notifications started up again out of nowhere. So I get how its easy not to read posts! But, no, if I ever saw a waterlily, it may have been at the zoo. I live in the dry west!
Sarah Wilkie
I thought you might have seen them in a botanical garden perhaps. But I guess they wouldn’t be common where you are!
Sue
What beautiful flowers those blue waterlillies are! and you did a grand job photographing all those other flowers
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Sue 😊 I loved those waterlilies!
