Red protects itself. No colour is as territorial. It stakes a claim, is on the alert against the spectrum.
Derek Jarman
Red is a primary colour and a rather schizophrenic one. It represents passion, warmth, and sexuality, but it also stands for danger, violence, and aggression. Red can’t be ignored, it demands to be noticed. From red hair to the red carpet this is a colour sure to turn heads.
For photographers the dominance of red in a scene can be used to create a point of interest and a sense of depth. I remember reading advice years ago that in photographing a landscape you should include a person wearing red; advice I’ve very definitely ignored! But it’s a wonderful colour to photograph in its own right, because you just can’t ignore it. From red flowers to red doors and windows, red autumn leaves to red hair; when I see red I just have to press the shutter!
In addition to what we might call a ‘pure’ red, there are many other reds: scarlet, crimson, carmine, vermillion, burgundy. I’ve used several of these in my gallery below, posted of course for Becky’s July Squares, Simply Red.
So …
… Put on your red shoes, and dance the blues.

So many wonderful reds here, Sarah.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Tish, glad you enjoyed them 🙂

When I think of red, I mostly think of flowers. But you have a great variety here. I love the red door in Malta (yes, there is definitely a number problem 😁) and lovely red cherry tomatoes!
Sarah Wilkie
I certainly could have filled this post just with red flowers but I was aiming for variety so I’m really happy you liked that about it 🙂
BeckyB
ooh another amazing collection
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Becky 🙂 I should have another lot later in the month!

great news 😀

Excellent work, Sarah. (Red is a colour I have no problem with. LOL)
Wasn’t there a music group called “Simply Red”? (Long time passing.)
Sarah Wilkie
Glad you could enjoy them 🙂 Yes, there was a group – Mick Hucknall was the lead singer I believe, with a lot of curly hair!
equinoxio21
That’s the one. Looks like he’s still around.

Beautiful reds all around! I’m really loving the red leaves as I’m ready for fall to cool off these hot days 🙂
Sarah Wilkie
Ready for fall already? A shame to wish the summer away, although I think I would find your generally hotter temperatures hard to take!
grandmisadventures
As soon as it hits around 80F- I’m ready for fall and cooler days. But the temperatures are just rising for the next couple of months

The door that doesn’t know which number it is! Funny what you come across… Like Anabel, I love the Header, but you couldn’t spoil that by squaring xx
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks Jo 😘 That door had us all puzzled – it was next to a bus stop and we had plenty of time to try to work out the correct number while we waited, but neither of them seemed to relate to others nearby!
Dawn M. Miller
Great reds. That neon is extraordinary!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Dawn – a number of people seem to be enjoying that one!

Oh my gosh, your red selection is striking. I quite agree about all the shades of red, too.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you 🙂 But as always I’m left wondering who this anonymous person is!
margaret21
Woo-hoo! What a feast! Not AT ALL sure about that last one though.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Margaret 😊 It was early October in Vegas so I guess that tour was a seasonal offering. That guy was promoting it on the Strip, but we declined!
margaret21
I would have too!

I would love to go to a neon light museum. The shutters are another favourite
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks Brian 🙂 See my reply to Anabel below re the neon museum. And I do love a colourful shutter!
Anabel @ The Glasgow Gallivanter
A fine selection! Though i have to admit my favourite is not one of the squares, but the featured neon. So striking!
Sarah Wilkie
That museum was great fun – lots of old Vegas history attached to those signs which I found much more interesting than present-day Vegas! Thank you Anabel 🙂
Sue
A great set of Red images, Sarah! And I love the Jarman quote….
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Sue 🙂 And apologies for the delay in replying. For some reason both of your duplicated comments (I assume you tried again when the first didn’t work?) ended up in my spam even though I long ago approved you!
