I have many special memories of Japan. The scent of incense rising before a shrine, and the rattle of fortune sticks as a backdrop. The serenity of a temple garden even among the crowds. The simplicity of each room in a merchant’s house in Takayama. The time taken out of a busy day to extend the courtesy of a bow and to wait patiently in line. The care taken to ensure that everything, from a gift box to a manhole cover, is as beautiful as it can possibly be.
But one colour dominates all of these memories: red. So where better to feature in my second contribution to Becky’s Red Squares?
The colour red has many meanings in Japan. They include passion, strength, self-sacrifice, authority, prosperity, and happiness. Red is also the symbolic colour of the country, used on its flag as a full red circle representing the sun.
Red is also used often in Japanese architecture, especially at Shinto shrines. It is considered to offer protection from evil, and to strengthen the spiritual connection with the gods.

It seems like a great place to take pictures of the color red. It’s important in their culture. I liked the pagoda surrounded by green foliage and the precious baby wrapped in red.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Siobhan 🙂 Yes, you can’t go far in Japan without encountering something (or someone) in red!
wetanddustyroads
The photo of the pagoda is beautiful. And I just think about it now, if these photos were taken 12 years ago, that new-born baby is almost a teenager today!
Sarah Wilkie
Wow, I hadn’t though of that! Yes, of course, he must be – but to me he will always be frozen in time as a baby!

Very fun “study in Red” from Japan. To help commemorate, there’s a LEGO version of the LOVE sculpture in the same colors, if you are so inclined between trips.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Brad 🙂 I didn’t know about that LEGO version!

So impressed you dredged up some fabulous pictures from your visit to Japan twelve years ago, Sarah! Red is such a vibrant color, so full of life and passion, as you mentioned at the outset. It’s certainly also the color I’d always associate from our visit to Japan last year.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Annie 🙂 I’d ‘gone digital’ by the time of our Japan trip so I have a decent file of images thankfully!
Teresa
What a wonderful and vibrant post of Japan. Love the baby in red.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Teresa 🙂 It was a real treat coming across that family at the baby’s blessing and being allowed by them to take photos!
Vicki
Thank you for sharing this wonderful selection of ‘red’ images from Japan. I enjoyed viewing them very much, more so as I wished I’d visited Japan when I was young(er).
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Vicki – I’m pleased to have been able to take you on a virtual visit to Japan 🙂
Amy
Excellent selections, Sarah! Beautiful, each one of these.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Amy 😊

What beautiful memories you have of Japan Sarah. You’ve made me long to see it with my own eyes. So many lovely red photos, I love the Love sign, and of course the baby. 💞
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Rose 😊 I loved Japan – not only the sights but also the sense of order and of consideration for others!
Anabel @ The Glasgow Gallivanter
Beautiful array. I haven’t been to Japan, but China is similarly associated with red for me.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Anabel 🙂 Yes, I think you’re right about China and red, though I maybe associate it even more with jade and similar shades. It probably depends which places you’ve visited!
lisaonthebeach
Wow, those are a lot of great red photos, Sarah! Lovely!
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Lisa 😊

I have exactly the same photos as your first three! We didn’t go to Kyoto though. Lovely images and fun to reminisce about our own recent trip to Japan.
Sarah Wilkie
What a coincidence! Or maybe not, as photos of these sights are a must 😀 A shame though that you didn’t get to Kyoto – that and Takayama were my favourite places.
the eternal traveller
I suspect everyone who goes to Sensoji has the same photos. 🙂 We did consider going to Kyoto but it didn’t really fit in with the rest of our plans so we decided to leave it for next time. Instead we stayed in the south and went to Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park and stayed at Gora, a tiny mountain village with hot springs, famous for its onsens. It was fantastic, we saw Fuji on four of our six days and each time it was cloud free. It was a great place to base ourselves for exploring the Hakone region. Next time we go to Japan we’ll go north.

A wonderful red gallery, Sarah.

Heyjude
I too associate the colour red with Japan. You have showcased the colour beautifully.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Jude 😊 A Japan post was inevitable once I saw Becky’s theme!

What a fabulous gallery! Japan doesn’t do ugly, does it? xx
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Jo 😊 No, you’re right, Japan doesn’t do ugly!
BeckyB
oh my goodness, what a feast of red. These are fabulous
Sarah Wilkie
Aw, thanks so much Becky, I’m really chuffed you like them 😊
Egídio
If there is one color I tend to associate with a country, it is red and Japan. Great shots.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Egidio 🙂 As soon as I saw Becky’s choice of theme I thought of Japan!
Easymalc
Travel and photography go together like Morecombe and Wise, but you are a master (or should it be mistress) of the art Sarah 🙂
Sarah Wilkie
Haha, a fun analogy Malcolm 😀 And I’ll take the compliment, either master or mistress!
sheetalbravon
Absolutely exquisite! Loved how you framed each photo to bring out its vibrant hue.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much, I’m really glad you liked them 😊

This is a terrifically vibrant post. I love it. And how strange that both you and Debbie have posted that Love image today, both from different places – countries even. And that I should have commented that I’d seen it somewhere different again!
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Margaret 😊 Yes, I know that LOVE sculpture can be found in a number of places, though this is the only one I’ve seen ‘in real life’ as it were!
margaret21
You don’t get out enough, Sarah 😉
Sarah Wilkie
😂😂 Did you see Graham’s comment? To add to the coincidences, he posted the Yorkshire Sculpture Park one! I assume you’ve seen that, as it’s near you?!
margaret21
I’ll go look for Graham’s comment – I’m currently in the Reader. Yep, the YSP one was the first for me.

Beautiful reds!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Anne 🙂

Japan certainly has a beautiful array of reds 🙂
Sarah Wilkie
It really does 😀
