I spy, with my little eye …
… Something beginning with H
Did you used to play that game? It was a staple with my family, to while away long car journeys. I rather suspect that my parents often deliberately gave us some wrong answers before ‘guessing’ correctly!
Another childhood favourite is the alphabet book. For the English speakers amongst us, the last few letters of the alphabet always presented the biggest challenges for those creating these books. X was always ‘for Xylophone’, Y ‘for Yacht’ or occasionally ‘for Yak’, and Z usually ‘for Zebra’.
But most letters offer a wide range of options, among them H. Would it be ‘for Horse’ or perhaps ‘for House’? Or any one of a number of alternatives?
For this week’s Monochrome Madness, let’s feature any subject beginning with that letter.
All these shots were converted with my go-to software, Nik Silver Efex Pro. My feature photo was taken in Oaxaca, Mexico, and I felt I had to use selective colour to preserve that red heart!

H is for HOUSE
The Arthur Heurtley House in Oak Park, Chicago, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright

H is for HORSE
Horse in the Valle de Cocora, Colombia

H is for HAT
Amish hat, Menno-Hof museum, Shipshewana, Indiana
H is for HELMET
Motorbike helmet in Siem Reap, Cambodia

H is for HERON
Heron, Osterley Park, west London
H is for HARVEST
Harvest time in Rajasthan, India

H is for HEAD
Sculpture in Mayfair, London

H is for HALONG BAY
Misty morning in Halong Bay, Vietnam

H is for HIBISCUS
At Cayena Beach Villas, Colombia

H is for HAWK
Galápagos Hawk, Santa Fe, Galápagos Islands

H is for HORNBILL
In Chobe National Park, Botswana

H is for HIPPOPOTAMUS
In the Okavango Delta, Botswana

H is for HANDS
Making moma in the market in Bangaan, Philippines

H is for HAMPSTEAD and HEATH
Winter on Hampstead Heath, London

H is for HALLOWEEN
Halloween in Grass Valley, California

H is for HIROSHIMA
Atomic Dome, Hiroshima, Japan
This was the only structure left standing in the area where the first atomic bomb exploded on 6 August 1945; it has been preserved as a memorial of the bombing and a symbol of peace.

H is for HEART
I’ll finish where I began, with a selectively coloured heart, this one from Haight Ashbury in San Francisco
To find out more about Monochrome Madness have a look at the information on Leanne’s blog. Meanwhile I’m looking forward to seeing all your H subject.!

A great gallery, Sarah! I especially liked the hibiscus and helmet photos. That helmet was so cute!
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks again Siobhan 😀 I love hibiscus flowers, I can never resist photographing them, and I had great fun ‘collecting’ bike helmet shots in Cambodia and Laos!

The heron is beautiful, and I also like the misty morning in Halong Bay.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much 🙂 As I mentioned to someone else, that heron posed beautifully for us, letting us get much closer than I would have expected!

I haven’t read the comments above, but wonder if anyone might have mentioned that the H word photo of the woman at the HARVEST in India could also have been HAPPY? That’s immediately what came to my mind when I saw her lovely smile.
Sarah Wilkie
That’s a great point Annie but no, no one’s mentioned that, although plenty have picked out that photo as a favourite 😀
Annie Berger
Glad to know I was in the same boat as many others!

I spy alot of great I pictures. I really love the one of the heron. We have a heron that lives near us that is always hanging out in the river. We have fondly named it Hera the Heron 🙂
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Meg 🙂 I love that you’ve named ‘your’ heron!

Such a great gallery of h’s Sarah. I always love the way you frame your photos.
I hope to find the inspiration to post again soon. Seeing some light at the end of the tunnel with Anthony
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much, and for taking the time to visit. From your mention of Anthony I’m guessing this is Alison – I’m not sure why the comment appears as anonymous. I’m glad you’re seeing light at the end of the tunnel and look forward to hearing more good news and catching up properly some time 🤗
Dawn M. Miller
These are wonderful. I especially like the heron.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Dawn 😊 That heron posed beautifully for us that day, letting us get quite close to him!

Thanks Phil 😀 We didn’t have the best weather there but at least we got out on the water just before everything shut down for COVID!

You’ve combed the dictionary and your archives to show us a rich variety of Hs. I’ve definitely not got Halong Bay or a hippo in my post! https://margaret21.com/2025/07/09/i-spy-with-my-little-eye/
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Margaret 😀 Yes, a good dig around in the archives was needed! Off to check your post now …

Great topic and a wonderful collection, Sarah. My favourite must be the happy person doing the harvesting India. I can feel the joy.
Here is mine for this week https://wanderingteresa.com/hungary-in-monochrome/

Thank you Teresa 🙂 We found the people in Rajasthan to be so friendly and so happy to be included in our photos – indeed, they would often ask to be! Off to check your post now …

These are fabulous Sarah 😀 The Hippo made me smile and the birds turned out so well too.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Brian 😊 Always glad to raise a smile with my photos!
Leanne Cole
You thought of so many Sarah, I really struggled with this, but you have done a great job. An amazing collection of images. I love the heart one, that was clever.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Leanne 🙂 I thought H would be one of the easier letters to choose! But I guess it depends what sort of photos you like to take. I’ll be interested to see what you come up with.
restlessjo
What a fabulous selection, Sarah. I loved that helmet, all of your birds are beautifully captured and the hippo made me smile xx
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Jo 😊 I developed a ‘thing’ for photographing bike helmets in S E Asia, there were so many quirky or fun designs! That was one of my favourites and I thought the pandas suited the B&W treatment. Glad the hippo made you smile too!
eklastic
What a wonderful gallery, Sarah! I love your harvest photo. I wish I could be so open to take people’s photographs. It works so great in b&w.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much 😊 I really like that photo now, both in colour and in this version (the first time I tried it in B&W). But as I said to Jude, I was really trying to take photos of her and some other women harvesting but when they noticed me they all stopped work to smile and wave! I never got the shots I intended but I did get this and a few others I like almost as much 😀

Yeah! You give so many ideas for the letter H. Loved these photos.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Egidio 🙂 I hope I’ve inspired you to join in!
Egídio
Sarah, there is plenty of inspiration. I’ll come up with something.
Heyjude
Harvest for me. Just look at her fabulous smile.
Sarah Wilkie
I know, I just love that smile! I was trying to take photos of a group of women harvesting but when they noticed me they all stopped work to smile and wave!
Monkey's Tale
A great colle Sarah. Im wondering what the hornbill looks like in colour. In this version its eyes look very intense. Maggie
Sarah Wilkie
He looks quite fierce with dark grey and white feathers, a red bill and yellow eyes. I don’t think I’ve ever used a colour version in a post but I have him on Flickr: https://www.flickr.com/photos/toonsarah/28852502997/in/album-72157671836033158
Monkey's Tale
An interesting looking bird. His eyes look pretty fierce in colour too 😊
Anne Sandler
Great H samples Sarah! I love the hands!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Anne 🙂 I used a differently tinted (but still monochrome) version of that hands photo in one of my virtual postcards from the Philippines, Id be curious to know which you prefer: https://www.toonsarah-travels.blog/a-postcard-from-the-philippines-hands-in-banaue-market/
Anne Sandler
Sarah, you asked a difficult question. Both are great. After going back and forth several times, I chose the sepia version because it soften the skin while keeping the aged wrinkles prominent. It also reduced the starkness of the whites. Both send the same message of hands well worked through life.
Sarah Wilkie
I’m inclined to agree Anne, it looks better in a softer colour 🙂 However I reworked it for this post to keep the colours consistent – on the whole I tend to prefer a cooler shade for monochrome apart from when I want a vintage look. These have a light selenium filter applied.
Sue
A great set of images, Sarah. Like the hippo, Halong bay, and your Hiroshima one is the best I’ve seen….
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Sue, especially for that lovely comment about the Hiroshima shot 😊
Sue
You are most welcome, Sarah
