Light makes photography. Embrace light. Admire it. Love it. But above all, know light. Know it for all you are worth, and you will know the key to photography.
George Eastman
One of the first things I was told when I first started to take photos as a ten year old was, always have the sun behind you when you shoot. Rubbish! That will of course result in a scene that is evenly lit and easy to capture. But it may also result in a scene that lacks interest.
What makes photography a strange invention is that its primary raw materials are light and time.
John Berger
Side lighting will add some contrast to your scene, with areas of brightness and shade. Meanwhile backlighting, while fiddlier to work with, can produce the most atmospheric and interesting of shots. Whether capturing the delicate details of a flower, or creating bold silhouettes, backlighting will add drama and depth to almost any scene.
Brian has asked us to share some black and white backlit images for Monochrome Madness. I’m travelling and with limited wifi but this is a topic I couldn’t resist! So I’ve scheduled this post before leaving. I’ll try to get online to add a link while away but if not will add a back-dated one on my return. I’ll also make sure I catch up with any comments eventually!
Meanwhile you can read more about Monochrome Madness on Leanne’s page about the challenge.
All these shots were converted with my go-to software, Nik Silver Efex Pro.

Impressive, Sarah! Love this backlit in BnW. Love the first one especially.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Amy 😊 I think the vote for the first one is almost unanimous!
Teresa
Such lovely backlit images. My favourite is your featured image.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Teresa 😊 That one seems to be a general favourite!

Ah, wonderful! Now, I’m questioning if we dream in color. 🤔 Dreamy! 🤩
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you 😊 I know I dream in colour, at least most of the time, but I believe not everyone does so.
Rose
These are all so fantastic Sarah. Backlit along with black and white add such depth to each shot. I absolutely love the elephant shot, it’s so ‘quiet’ and thought-provoking. So is the deer, the volcano, the grasses… all simply beautiful.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Rose, I’m really happy you liked these images 😊
Leanne Cole
I was told the same thing Sarah, glad neither of us took the advice. These are fantastic Sarah.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Leanne 😊 I realised many years ago that the main point of learning these rules is to know when to break them!

Dear Sarah
Unfortunately, we have Muntjac deer visiting our garden every day. They like flowers for a meal.
Nice perspective of the well in Paris.
Happy weekend

Ah yes, my sister has the same problem with muntjac from time to time!

Beautiful pictures- I really love the plants featured, but my favorite is the waves of grass in California 🙂
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Meg 😊 Good to hear your favourites as always!

Sarah, the elephant and boating down Narayani river really drew me in and here I thought Nepal could be framed only for its mountains, temples and people. Gorgeous clicks!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Sheetal 😊 One thing we lived about Nepal was the variety – everything you mention but also the landscapes of the national parks and the wildlife!

Wow! What a gallery! The opener is simply gorgeous. The air is alive in that shot. I also liked the flowers a lot. They seem to get an extra dose of light when we shoot them backlit.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Egidio 😊 I think backlighting brings out the delicacy of flowers.

So funny that you couldn’t resist this challenge, even when you’re off on an adventure, Sarah. I had to look! The elephant shot is definitely special and I love that Lodge too. Back you go to whale watching! xx
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Jo 😊 Three whale species so far – beluga (twice but very distant), sei (which I’d never heard of, let alone seen!) and last night blue whales 🐳

What an amazing collection of backlit images Sarah. I like how you used shadowed figures to tell the story. The deer and elephant are excellent. Hope you’re enjoying your trip.

Lovely. The Muntjac deer shot is my favourite. And I’d like a lot of these in colour too, I think. I hope your latest holiday is going well.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Margaret 😊 I’m sure that deer is around somewhere in the blog in his colour version! Having a great time thanks, and spent much of today in the area where the Woman in the Polar Night stayed!

Some of the most beautiful photos I have taken (that’s now in my humble opinion 😉), were taken directly into the sun and I especially love taking them this way at sunset on the beach. I have two favourite photos here – the muntjac deer and the other one of Arenal Volcano.
Sarah Wilkie
When back-lit photos come out well, they often come out VERY well! That muntjac deer shot is a favourite of mine, I must admit 😊
Tish Farrell
So many wonderful shots here, Sarah. But the elephant silhouette is v. special.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Tish, glad you like that elephant 🐘 😀
Sue
What a great set of backlit images, Sarah! Love the elephant in the water, the little muntjac deer, hibiscus, on the terrace and that last image…oh, and the spray. Suppose that’s all of them! 😊😊
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Sue 😊 Yes,I think you covered most of them there!
Annie Berger
A lovely collection of sun-filled shots, Sarah. I wonder if you’ve got my h sun where you are now.
Sarah Wilkie
