Wings are of many kinds. Butterfly’s wings, vulture’s wings, eagle-wings, spread wings of white swans, dragonfly’s serene wings, wings of albatross, lovely wings of hummingbirds, tiny wings of a fly or a bumble-bee-wings; and when they fly, they fly their best according to their ability of flying. We should not underestimate the size of those heavenly wings.
Munia Khan, author and poet
If you could choose a superpower, what would you opt for? Many of us, I think, would choose the ability to fly. Haven’t you sometimes watched a bird ride the thermals and wish that you could do the same? Or looked down at the earth from a plane and wish to be able to enjoy such views all the time? And how much better to fly above busy city streets than to fight your way through crowds!
For Beth’s Lens Artists challenge theme of Wings, I’ve decided to focus on those creatures that do have that superpower: birds, butterflies, bees and more. Seeing these creatures always gives us a lift, and in the dark days of the Northern Hemisphere winter even more so.
My feature photo was taken at the bird cliffs in Alkefjellet. I could definitely have filled a whole post with birds from that and other Svalbard locations, but you have seen those images far too recently for me to want to duplicate more than a couple!

What a great.cillectuon of so many winged things
Sarah Wilkie
Very glad you enjoyed them Meg – thank you 🙂
Annie Berger
I had never entertained the idea of a magical power previously, Sarah, until I read your post! Like some other readers, your hummingbird photos were spot on. I liked the hint of purple in them.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Annie 🙂 Those hummingbirds certainly seem to have stolen the show!

Ah – a varied and beautiful post as usual! Sarah, the Nepalese skimmer stopped me in my tracks…what a stunner! And hummingbirds are always favourites too.
Sarah Wilkie
Very many thanks Ann-Christine 😊 That Nepalese skimmer intrigued me as from a distance I couldn’t see the transparent wing-tips so I thought he had a jagged edge to his wings!
Sofia Alves
Beautiful galleries, Sarah, the hummingbirds are favourites, of course! However, I love your last gallery, I think you have some cool bugs there 🙂
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Sofia 😊 It seems to be pretty much a two-way tie between hummingbirds and butterflies but I’m glad you liked the other bugs too!
Teresa
These are fun shots but the butterflies are really my favourite.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks Teresa 🙂 It’s hard to find anything prettier than a butterfly!
Leanne Cole
I love the bees, I wish we had bumble bees here, they are so good to photograph. Lots of great wings Sarah.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Leanne 🙂 I didn’t know that you don’t have bumblebees in Australia! You’re right, they are good to photograph.
JohnRH
Great selections Sarah. Love ’em.
Sarah Wilkie
Many thanks John 🙂

Nice collection. Hummingbirds are my favorite. I’m glad they spend part of the year up here in the mountains with us. I put my feeders out from May 1 to September 1.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Ruth 🙂 It must be lovely to have hummingbirds visit you regularly!
rkrontheroad
That it is! It’s not a climate for many birds, but they are regulars. And all year we have Stellar’s Blue Jays, a splash of color in a winter landscape.
Heyjude
Another beautiful gallery. Lots to love here. Like others I envy you the humming birds. I saw sunbirds in South Africa, brightly coloured, but they are bigger and don’t hover as much.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Jude 🙂 As I said to those others, there is definitely something special about hummingbirds!

Sarah, your gallery of natural flyers really showcases the beautiful natural aviators. I like to photograph birds, but my favorite place in a botanical garden is the butterfly enclosure!
Sarah Wilkie
Many thanks John 😊 I love a butterfly enclosure too – my Selvatura shot was taken in one.
Ritva Sillanmäki Photography
you always have beautiful galleries, this time too. The Rufous-Tailed Hummingbird – Drake Bay, Costa Rica was a great shot. And well, Golden heliconian or tiger longwing, Selvatura, Costa Rica stood out to me amongst all these beautiful pictures
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Ritva 🙂 I really appreciated hearing which were your favourites!

I love taking photos of butterflies, but don’t have many of bees – insects are so intriguing to watch.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Nilla 🙂 I love to photograph bees although it can be a challenge as they always seem to move just as I press the shutter!
Image Earth Travel
Ha, ha, I know what you mean as I have the same problem with butterfiles. 😉
bushboy
Lots of winged magic here Sarah 😀 I am glad you didn’t forget all the insects who have wings not just the butterflies
Sarah Wilkie
Many thanks Brian 😊 Oh, I certainly couldn’t forget the bees and dragonflies, and I was pleased to find a few others to include too!
Vicki
So many wonderful examples of wings. You must have a steady hand to capture the dragonflys and damselflies. I’ve never seen a dragonfly with orange wings before, so that was very interesting.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Vicki 😊 I’d never seen a dragonfly with orange wings either – I stalked him for a while before he stopped still long enough for me to take a couple of photos!
Suzanne@PictureRetirement
I’ve seen hummingbirds buzzing around the plants and feeders in my mother’s yard. They are fascinating to watch. I was just at her home a few days ago, and there weren’t any. She says they have migrated to Costa Rica for the winter. I thought she was kidding, and now I see that’s where you took the photo. Hmmm… There is so much beauty in this post. Thank you.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Suzanne 🙂 We saw lots of hummingbirds in Costa Rica but I’m not sure if they were seasonal migrants or year-round residents.

Like Margaret, I’ve never seen a hummingbird in real life. Is the doctor bird similar, Sarah? I love those two photos but your butterflies are wonderful too xx
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Jo 😊 The doctor bird is a type of hummingbird and is the national bird of Jamaica. I took that photo from the terrace of the B&B where we stayed in Ocho Rios. I used to love watching them every morning at breakfast!
restlessjo
I can imagine xx
Joanne
Beautiful, beautiful pictures, Sarah!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Joanne 🙂
Yvonne Dumsday
What a great selection. My childhood dream, of being able to fly, really seemed to have come true when no I learned to scuba dive- just flying underwater.
Sarah Wilkie
Many thanks Yvonne 🙂 I’ve never learned to scuba dive but I can see how it would be a bit like flying.
Anne Sandler
Great winged gallery Sarah!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Anne 🙂
Egídio
Sarah, with each gallery, I kept changing my mind as to what series I liked best. Wow! The birds and other flying creatures are great, but I think I could look at hundreds of butterfly photos and never tire of doing that. Your photos are superb!
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Egidio 😊 I’m really pleased you enjoyed all these photos and especially the butterflies!
Tina Schell
A wonderful collection as always Sarah. Interestingly I’m not particularly fond of the color orange but my two favorites of these beautiful sets are the orange butterfly on the orange flowers and the orange damselfly. Go figure!!
Sarah Wilkie
Many thanks Tina 😊 Funnily enough I’m not a big fan of orange but I was particularly pleased with both those shots – the butterfly because he matches the flowers so well and the skimmer in Nepal because he’s so unusual!
Wandering Dawgs
Rebecca, lovely galleries of wings in nature. Your birds are beautiful, especially the hummingbirds. I also love the butterflies and bees. Great captures of the dragonflies. Thanks for participating in the challenge.
Sarah Wilkie
Many thanks Beth – it was a fun challenge to do 😀 But I think you’re a little confused, as my name is Sarah, not Rebecca!
Sue
Like Margaret, I LOVE those hummingbirds! Well done for getting these superb images
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Sue – hummingbirds ARE rather wonderful 🙂
Sue
…. and beautiful too!
margaret21
Lots to enjoy here Sarah. But those hummingbirds have stolen my heart. So well captured! I’ve never seen these, except on screens or in books. It must be thrilling.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Margaret ☺️ Oh yes, seeing hummingbirds is always very special!
