Life is one big road with lots of signs,
So when you riding through the ruts,
Don’t you complicate your mind …
Bob Marley
Walk down any street in any city and you will be confronted by a myriad of signs. There are the obvious ones telling you the name of the street, and those giving instructions or advice to drivers. ‘Junction ahead’. ‘One way street’. ‘Watch out for pedestrians’. And so on.
Much more interesting though are the random unofficial signs. Maybe there’s a quirky shop name. Or a poster put up in a window. A sign incorporated into some graffiti. Or when abroad, an amusingly translated direction.
When I saw Ritva’s theme for this week’s Lens Artists challenge, street details, I immediately started a search through my archives, knowing that I would have plenty of these. There were so many I began to sort them into themes such as signs, street furniture etc. But there were too many, so I took the easy way out when it came to reducing the pile and simply chose one of those categories, signs. I hope Ritva will forgive this rather narrow interpretation of her chosen subject!
All these signs caught my eye for one reason or another. They made me smile, they made me think or they simply said something to me about the place I was visiting. Most were taken on my travels but a few are from closer to home in London, and one in Newcastle. My feature photo is from Ferndale in California. Click on any photo in the galleries to open a slideshow with captions if you want to know where I found the other signs.

A fun post. The “no peeing” sign made me chuckle, good luck with getting any dog not to pee where it damn well likes. I thought it was interesting that they chose to write all the positive words (unity, optimism and opportunity etc) in black. The Angkor What? bar was a blast from the past. I remember sauntering down Pub Street the day they were packing everything up and closing down because of COVID. Delighted to see that, unlike so many bars on that street they actually reopened and are still going strong.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks Leighton 😀 That Angkor What sign photo was taken in early 2020, just before Covid lock down, so I can’t say if they reopened or not. I do hope so!

They reopened, I checked after seeing your photo

Loved all your signs, Sarah.
The “nothing happened here” sign I’ve seen in French in Taverny. North west of Paris. (On the way to Monneville…)
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you 😊 I think there must be quite a few such signs in various places. There’s one in London near Red Lion Square but I couldn’t find the photo I’m convinced I once took of it!
equinoxio21
You probably have so many pix, it might be hard to find a specific one.
Mine are more or less well-organised. Place and time folders. Works.
Sarah Wilkie
I have place and time folders too, and these days I tag my photos too. But for London there are just so many, and going back years!
equinoxio21
Tagging photos? Wow. No way. Just in family archives, I have 11,000 pix. From the 19th century till the 1970’s.
And I can imagine London…

Perfect choice for the challenge, Sarah, you have such a cool collection of signs!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Sofia 🙂

What a great assortment of signs you’ve complied, Sarah. My favorite was the one from Old Town Chicago indicating people have choices to make each day. BTW, I never realized there was an Old Town in Chicago, and we visit there a few times a year!
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Annie 😊 That’s one of my favourites too. I used it previously in a write-up of a walking tour of Old Town which you must have missed at the time. You might be interested in it as you visit the city so regularly: https://www.toonsarah-travels.blog/a-stroll-in-chicagos-old-town/

That is quite the collection! Beautiful
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Pamela 🙂

I like the one with the Red Bull. There’s a similar one about unattended children at the VA food market in Cape Town. They also had another sign that said “We have no WIFI—Talk to each other and pretend it’s 1995”.
Also like the Baltic Way sign. Nice collection!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Mick 🙂 I’m sure I have a variation on the unattended children one that mentions espresso rather than Red Bull, but it was from ages ago and I couldn’t find it.
Heyjude
A great selection Sarah, I enjoyed scrolling through each gallery.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Jude, glad you enjoyed scrolling through (and took the time to do so!)
Leanne Cole

Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Leanne 😊
Tina Schell
Fun choices for the week Sarah! I too have a thing for signs but you’re WAY past me with this one!! Must admit I didn’t think of them for the challenge but of course they’re perfect!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Tina 😊 Funnily enough these signs were among the first things I thought of, and I had so many it seemed silly to start looking for other details to include!
JohnRH
HA! Priceless!!! Elvis Smyth, I presume.
Sarah Wilkie
Haha, could well be 🤣🤣
Anabel @ The Glasgow Gallivanter
Love these! I like a good sign too and have a file of them.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Anabel 🙂 I don’t have a separate file but I do tag them, so these were quite easy to unearth!
Anabel @ The Glasgow Gallivanter
You never know when these things will come in handy!
Rebecca
Cheeky signs, indeed! I come across a few from time to time, but you seem to encounter them quite frequently! The “unattended children” sign especially gave me a smile!
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks Rebecca 🙂 It’s surprising how many of these you spot when you start looking!
Graham Stephen

Fun and creative Sarah. I especially loved the “Every day, we have a choice.” and “MAKE RACISTS AFRAID AGAIN”.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Rose 🙂 I liked those two, especially ‘Every day, we have a choice’ – so true!
Monkey's Tale
Great signs Sarah, love them all but my favs are Retoad, I got this Belly, and Earth without art 🙂 Maggie
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Maggie, I’m so pleased you enjoyed them 😊 Earth without art is a favourite of mine – so simple but clever!
Anne Sandler
What a great post to start off my morning Sarah. I started laughing at the first sign and smiled all the way through!
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Anne 😊 I’m glad to have got you laughing and smiling!
Alison
Fun collection of signs Sarah. I laughed at the one that said “I got this belly at the Non Nom Deli”.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Alison 🙂 That one made me laugh too!
Ritva Sillanmäki Photography
Great signs, this is so up my husbands alley. Elvis slept here… must have been in his early years 😀 There are so many to comment, but ‘Take the high road’, is a great one. Good choice to concentrate on.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Ritva, I really enjoyed this challenge 🙂 I’m glad you like my approach.
Teresa
Some witty signs, Sarah. Love the Earth without art …
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Teresa 😊 That one is clever, isn’t it?!
Sue
Brilliant collection! The frog one really amused me…toad away for goodness sake! And giving children Redbull, and teaching them to swear in the modern world might not be the deterrent it once was….
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Sue 😊 Glad to have given you a smile this morning. I think you’re right about the Red Bull!
Sue
Sadly…
Jim Earlam
Great collection Sarah! and well put together, amusing, thought provoking and poignant 😀
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Jim, I’m glad you liked them 😊
Vicki
What a great collection of signs. i love the sense of humour in signage, especially if the makers take the time to include some thoughtful message – good or bad.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Vicki 😊 I agree, it’s always good to include some humour to catch the eye or reinforce your message!
Yvonne Dumsday
What an entertaining and eclectic collection Sarah. One of mine that I found outside a restaurant on a small Greek island was a picture of a snail, with the inscription “Slow Food”. 😁
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Yvonne – that one would definitely have made it into this set had I seen it 😀
bushboy
So many fabulous signs Sarah 😀 Too long a list to name favourites
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Brian 😊
margaret21
What a fine collection! I rather like the Frog sign.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Margaret 🙂 I’m rather fond of that too – it’s clever of the Japanese to be able to pun in what is to them a foreign language! It’s in a street in Matsumoto whose name means ‘frog street’.
