In photography there are no shadows that cannot be illuminated
August Sander
Photography, especially black and white photography, is all about light and darkness, and balancing the two. Too much of either and the photo is at best dull, at worst incomprehensible.
This month we are squaring shadow images for Becky’s November Squares challenge. I think shadows can be very effective when captured in monochrome, as it emphasises those light/dark contrasts. So this week I’m doubling up with Leanne’s theme-free Monochrome Madness.
My previous set of shadows took you all over the world. In contrast, for this post I have selected shadowy images from my London files, so all very close to home.
My feature photo was taken in Green Park. It does worry me that the goose on the far left appears headless, but I’m pretty sure that wasn’t actually the case!

Aren’t those gates gorgeous.
Sarah Wilkie
Yes absolutely!

Wonderful again. Wapping? I remember my Brit bosses moving our offices from Grosvenor Square to Wapping…
Sarah Wilkie
Rents would be a LOT cheaper there!
equinoxio21
Late 80’s? That was the idea. The company was growing very fast, and just could not have afforded the rent in Grovesnor sq. Or found the space. 😉
Amy
Remarkable shadow images in BnW!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Amy 😊
Annie Berger
I’m sure you can guess that my favorite photo is the image of Canada Gate, Sarah, although Queen’s House was very pleasing, too!
Sarah Wilkie
That seems to be most people’s favourite, even those with no connection to the country! Thanks Annie 🙂
grandmisadventures
Beautiful! I really love that perfect shot of the gates at Buckingham Palace with the sun coming through
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks Meg 😊 That shot of the gates seems to be the general favourite in this collection!
Anabel @ The Glasgow Gallivanter
All terrific, hard to choose favourites though Canada Gate and Wapping would be up there. It wouldn’t be the tubby gentleman!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Anabel 😊 Haha, no, that gentleman isn’t much to look at – but I did think he made for a good candid shot!
Rose
Wonderful photos. I really liked the long hall look of the The Queen’s House, Greenwich.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Rose 🙂 The Queen’s House is a beautiful building, inside and out!

Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Maggie 😊 I’m not too surprised at your choice of favourite!
Teresa
Ahhh mazing shots Sarah. I am missing London now.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Teresa 😊 I’m sure you’ll be back in the not too distant future? And when you next come we must try to get together!
Teresa
I would love that! Hopefully soon.
Leanne Cole
These are great shadows Sarah, though I think I like the Canada Gate one the most, it is amazing.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Leanne 🙂 As I said to Egidio, Canada Gate is rather stunning in any light, but the backlighting and long shadows that day really worked well for a photo!
sustainabilitea
A different look compared to what we would see in color. 🥰

Sarah Wilkie
Thanks Janet 🙂 Yes, some of these shots look very different in colour
EgÃdio

Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Egidio 🙂 Canada Gate is rather stunning in any light!

Thank you Jo, glad you found some favourites here 🙂

Winter on Hampstead Heath looks good
Sarah Wilkie
That was a lovely December day a few years ago when I had a great walk there with friends 🙂
Sue
😊
Heyjude
Worryingly your selfie appears to be missing a head too…
Sarah Wilkie
The second one? Yes, it does rather 🤣 But I’m sure I had it with me that day! I do hate it when people’s heads are cut off in photos, don’t you?!!
Heyjude
Actually the first one, I mistook your arms for legs 😂
Sarah Wilkie
🤣🤣🤣

These are great squares and shadows in Monochrome. The Queen’s House, Greenwich, Visitors to Battersea Power Station appealed to me the most
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Ritva, I always enjoy hearing which images appealed to people 🙂

These are great. But you didn’t take that first shot today, did you? Brrrr!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Margaret 😀 Gish no, that was a late summer day some years ago!
