The Arctic is a magical place, wild, bleak, hauntingly beautiful. It is also, surprisingly perhaps, full of colour. However there are plenty of scenes that lend themselves to black and white photography too.

For several years now I have longed to visit Svalbard. A land where the sun never sets in summer, nor rises in winter. A land 60% covered with glaciers and home to exciting wildlife such as polar bears and walrus. And finally this year I made it.

Who hasn’t been mesmerised at times by the sight and sound of the sea? Watching the movement of waves, whether on the shore or from a ship, can be almost hypnotising, or so I find.

What is better than seeing a beautiful landscape captured in a photograph? Often, seeing the same landscape twice. A still lake, or if we’re lucky a still river, will allow us to double up the scene and often double the beauty. But we aren’t restricted to water when we look for reflective surfaces to enhance our images or give them a different twist.

There’s a lot to be said for not knowing where you want to go, especially when travelling. Whether in a city or in the country, whether somewhere shaped by man or in wild places, there’s a particular sense of anticipation as you follow a path without knowing where it is taking you.

Whatever the weather, when travelling it would be a waste of a day to stay inside. And with the right clothing it’s always possible to get out and explore. I want to show how bad weather needn't throw you off course when travelling. How with the right attitude and a bit of flexibility, even a stormy day can be fun!

Once upon a time all photos were black and white. With the advent of colour photography we had a choice and many of us make that choice according to subject matter. Others meanwhile prefer to stick only to one or the other medium. But some subjects are naturally black and white.

The best travel books should leave you with a desire to visit the places they describe. Experiencing these journeys vicariously is a wonderful way to discover potential destinations, or to see ones you have already visited through fresh eyes. It is also a great way to see how all of us travel in different ways.

According to Wikipedia, Mount Etna is an active stratovolcano on the east coast of Sicily and is one of the tallest active volcanoes in Europe, and the tallest peak in Italy south of the Alps. Its height however varies depending on eruptions.

The short but beautiful Loboc River winds its way through lush scenery in the heart of Bohol Island. Its banks are lined with dense forest, broken here and by clearings with simple houses. Its waters are crystal-clear and emerald green. Unsurprising then that it has spawned a significant amount of tourist activity.
