Greetings from Sicily
Mount Etna from the lemon groves
According to Wikipedia, Mount Etna is an active stratovolcano on the east coast of Sicily and is one of the tallest active volcanoes in Europe, and the tallest peak in Italy south of the Alps. Its height however varies depending on eruptions. At present it seems very quiet, though on my previous visit to this region in the late 1980s it looked much more lively. Seen from the orange groves surrounding the B&B where I stayed with my friends, near Taormina, it was a beautiful and impressive sight.

Unlike you and your friends, Sarah, Steven and I did drive to the top of Mt. Etna last fall, as we knew we wouldn’t return. However, we weren’t lucky enough to see any fruit in the orchards under Etna’s shadow.

I remember that you went up Etna. I would have liked to but we were only in the area a few days and my friends weren’t especially keen, so as I have been up once before, many years ago, I didnβt press the point. But enjoying these views from our B&B was a real treat!

Catching up with old friends and feeling instantly at home with your postcard from Sicily, my favourite part of Italy. Although I’ve spent time at the foot of Etna I’ve never had the nerve to go on the mountain, I’m really scared of volcanoes and every time I’m in TΓΌrkiye or Naples or anywhere near one I carry the dread around with me. I’ve been showered in ash in Catania and watched the lava flow down the sides of the mountain from Taormina and I’ll settle for that. I shall continue reading the blog posts I’ve missed from your site and although I may not be able to comment on them, you can be sure I will derive great pleasure from the readings. Hope all well with you.

Thank you for stopping by and leaving such an interesting comment. We didn’t go up Etna on this visit. I had been up with Chris years ago and the friends I’m travelling with, like you, we’re rather wary of it. Anyway there was more than enough to do without that!

Mount Etna reminded me of my geography lesson from school. Then there was no google and certainly no fantastic photo like yours for reference so coming across it on your blog makes it even more special. Happy travels, Sarah. You are like my very own colourful Atlas.π
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you for that sweet comment Sheetal π When I see places like this, I often feel that I’m bringing my school geography lessons to life!

Lovely view.
I thought Mt Etna had erupted again in late April 2025?
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Vicki π I think the last ‘proper’ eruption was in February this year.

lovely view, I saw Aetna earlier in the year and it still had quite a lot of snow on the low slopes and I certainly didn’t see any lemon groves! Have a lovely trip and many more photographs

Thanks Sue π There’s snow still near the top but nothing lower.
Sue
Ah, OK!
Monkey's Tale
Didn’t it erupt just recently? You have a wonderful view of it. I stayed in a resort in Catania many years ago and could see it from my window too. Quite the impressive looking volcano. Maggie
Sarah Wilkie
I think you may be right, I’ll have to check. We’re now further south near Syracusa, but can still see it in the distance.
