Greetings from Whitstable
Seaside sunset
Whitstable is renowned for its sunsets. Situated on the north coast of Kent it offers spectacular views of the sky looking towards the Thames Estuary and Isle of Sheppey. At low tide the shallow water and wet shingle beach reflect the colours. It was skies like the one we saw last night that inspired the artist JMW Turner. The internet is probably already overloaded with Whitstable sunsets but I can’t resist adding my own!

Turner now? I didn’t know this detail. (But then there are so many details one doesn’t know…)
Nice sunset, Sarah
Sarah Wilkie
Yes, he often painted on this coast and there’s a contemporary art gallery in nearby Margate named for him
equinoxio21
I had to look his paintings up and realised I really didn’t know his work. Lots of “marine”, paintings of ships and harbours…
Sarah Wilkie
Really?? He’s one of the two most famous English artists I would say, along with Constable, and I far prefer him to the latter. His skies are always incredible!

My English culture is so full of holes…๐ Remember I never went to school in England. (Or anywhere actually for that matter…)
Au revoir chรจre amie.
Sarah Wilkie
Very true ๐ Although I never went to school in France but have heard of Cรฉzanne, Monet, Manet … Nor in Spain but have heard of Picasso, nor in the US but have heard of O’Keeffe, nor in Mexico but have heard of Kahlo ๐ Etc., etc., etc. Turner is so famous here that he would be as well-known by most Brits as all of those and probably more so than some of them!! I guess I just took it for granted that he was as famous outside the country but maybe I need to add an explanation to my text rather than assume readers would know whom I’m talking about?

Gorgeous. So unusual to see the pink reflected on the sand too. I’ve never seen that before. Or is it shallow water on the sand (to cause the reflection)?
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Vicki ๐ Yes, that’s shallow water causing the reflections, and it’s on shingle rather than sand – there aren’t many sandy beaches on this part of the coast. This is actually the start of the Thames estuary rather than open water so it’s quite shallow, which is why I think a lot of water remains on some areas of the beach even at low tide.

So beautiful! I love the layers of colors

Thanks so much Meg ๐ We saw similar views every evening of our brief visit!

With sunsets like that, I don’t think you can have too many pictures. Whitstable is definitely on the list for summer exploring in Kent.
Sarah Wilkie
We had a lovely sunset on each evening of our three day stay, and all different! We really like Whitstable, I hope you enjoy it too.

Fabulous photo of our favourite spot when we lived in Kent. Oh, the oysters!
Sarah Wilkie
Unfortunately I can’t eat oysters so that asoect of the town is lost on me, but there’s plenty more to enjoy!
Tish Farrell
It’s a very special place. Sorry about the oysters, though having said that, we’ve not eaten them since a very bad oyster moment from a Shropshire-based supplier.
Sarah Wilkie
It was a very bad experience that turned me away from them!

What can I say … except ‘What a stunning sunset’!

Sunsets over the sea are do good Sarah
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Brian ๐ It’s one of the best places to see them when you get reflections like these!
Heyjude
Finally had a glimpse of pink tonight. First in a week of fog, and the sea fog was aready coming in.
Sarah Wilkie
I’m glad you’ve had a glimpse at least ๐ It’s good to be having the sunshine in Whitstable but it’s already a bit hot for me and London is going to be unbearably so when we go back tomorrow!
Heyjude
Yes looks like you are going to catch the worst of it.
Suzanne
Wonderfully captured, Sarah and the ice-cream colour tones a bonus.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Suzanne ๐
Steven and Annie Berger
