I climb way up to the top of the stairs
And all my cares just drift right into space (Up on the roof)
On the roof, it’s peaceful as can be
And there, the world below can’t bother me
Up on the roof, Carole King & Gerry Goffin
I don’t think many of us have a roof we can climb up on to; I know I don’t. But the sensation of being up above the world is one we can easily relate to if we’ve ever been to the top of a tall building.
For Brian’s Monochrome Madness challenge this week I considered sharing images taken in such locations. But instead I’ve gone for a more literal interpretation, searching through my archives for images of animate and inanimate subjects found on rooftops around the world, from cats to crosses! I hope they demonstrate that it is always worth looking up while carrying a camera. You never know what you might see!
To find out more about Monochrome Madness have a look at the information on Leanne’s blog.

A very varied selection. From Kitty cat to Hanuman in Nepal. (I assume Hanuman, but I might be wrong)
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you 😀 I don’t know if that’s Hanuman, sorry!
equinoxio21
Probably is, looks like a monkey.

Who would have thought there could be so many different things on a roof! The cat in Chile is beautiful, and I like the last photo of the chimneys on the roof in Portugal – it feels like a mix of old and new.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Corna 😊 I love the chimneys of the Algarve, but there’s nothing very new about that Faro photo – even the TV aerial looks quite ‘old tech’ these days!
grandmisadventures
Love the variety of things on a roof 🙂
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Meg, I’m glad you enjoyed them 🙂

What a feast for the eyes Sarah! I love how you captured such interesting photos from a topic that a lot of us don’t think about.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you – I might not have thought of it had Brian not set the theme!
margaret21
Such an appetising selection Sarah. But for all the wonders you share here, there’s just something about that first cat ….
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Margaret 😊 Anabel too was taken with that cat, as was I when I spotted him!
Leanne Cole
You have picked some great ones Sarah, I kept thinking one would be my favourite and then the next one would be, lol. Love the cats and the storks nest, that was funny. I have a flat roof, so it is pretty cool to get up there, but as I get older the less I like it.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Leanne 😊 I have quite a few photos of storks’ nests in Portugal in particular but I had to choose that one because of the chicks!

You do come up with some great ideas for posts Sarah!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Phil, but all the credit for most of my themed posts must go to those setting these challenges, in this case Brian (aka Bushboy). I do always credit them in my post and provide a link 🙂 I simply choose which challenges to respond to, depending on whether they appeal to me and suit my style(s) of photography. The challenges are a great way of making use of and showcasing my extensive archive of photos from our travels!

I love roof ornaments and you have given a wide variety here. The algarve chimneys were always fun to see, but I love all of these, with no favourites. Maggie
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Maggie 😊 Glad you enjoyed those Algarve chimneys – they’re such an iconic sight, aren’t they?
Anne Sandler
What a great selection for the challenge Sarah! That first cat is the cat’s meow. And the weather vane cat was new to me. All the rest are just great.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Anne 😊 Glad you enjoyed the cats in particular!
Anabel @ The Glasgow Gallivanter
Love all of these, but I keep going back to the sleepy pussy cat.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Anabel – he’s rather sweet, isn’t he?
bushboy
Wow Sarah, what a fabulous gallery. You always have the best of the world in every subject.
Each scroll down emitted sighs. A cat weather vane is a first for me, so happy you included my favourite roof top birds, Storks as well as other birds. The ridge beast of China are nowhere as near as weird as the South Korean ones, but fierce nevertheless. The chimneys in Faro are most unusual.
Thanks for joining in MM#56 😀
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Brian, for the lovely comment and a theme that was right up my street 😀 The Chinese ridge beasts are an iconic sight and I couldn’t stop taking photos of them, so I had to be very disciplined in only choosing two shots for this post! The Faro chimneys are classic examples of those found all along the Algarve.
Sue
What a marvellous set of roof denizens, Sarah, brilliantly showcase in black and white
Sarah Wilkie
Many thanks Sue – ‘denizens’ is a great word to describe this slightly random collection 😀
EgÃdio
Sarah, this collection is magnificent. The tonal contrast is top-notch. Although each image tops the previews one, I found myself going back to the ones in Beijing. What views!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you so much for that lovely comment Egidio 😊 I have so many photos of those ridge beasts from Beijing, I could probably have filled a whole post with them!
