If adventures will not befall a young lady in her own village, she must seek them abroad
Jane Austen, Northanger Abbey
I may not live in a village but I still feel the need to seek adventures abroad, especially in the tail-end of winter. So for most of February I have been in Sri Lanka, enjoying a mix of wildlife, culture and a bit of relaxation.
This therefore will be a rather different monthly round-up from usual. I am still working through the hundreds of photos I took each day! So my slideshow consists of a handful of shots pulled out of the pile and chosen to reflect the variety of places we went and sights we saw.
For interest/information, here is our rough itinerary:
Negombo (hotel near the airport for our first night)
The Mudhouse (a very unique eco-lodge which I’ll post about in more length soon)
Wilpattu National Park (wonderful wildlife sightings, especially birds, and a glimpse of a leopard)
Jaffna (former Tamil Tigers stronghold and still ethnically very different from the rest of the country)
Cultural Triangle area (Sigiriya, aka Lion Rock, and other ruins and temples)
Gal Oya National Park (beautiful landscapes and elephants)
Kandy (Temple of the Tooth)
Galle Fort (lovely colonial architecture)
Cape Weligama (a touch of luxury for coastal relaxation)
You will see more than enough of all those places over the next few months but for now, as I said, here is just a small taste.
Technical notes

All these shots were taken with my Panasonic Lumix bridge camera, my preferred choice when travelling. Unusually for me, they were all edited with software on my tablet while travelling; most with the standard gallery editing options and a few further edited with an app called Lumii. Some have been further tweaked in Photoshop Elements. And they may well appear again, differently edited (or the same!), in future posts about the trip.
As always, I am linking my selection to Ju-Lyn’s and Brian’s Changing Seasons challenge. And I’m also linking to Natalie’s new Monthly Wrap-up. Please use the arrows to navigate the slideshow if you want to see all the images.
My feature photo is of sunrise at the Mudhouse

These are all such beautiful photos, the wildlife ones and the ones with people are particularly captivating. I would love to visit Sri Lanka one day!

Oh thank you so much 😊 I’m really pleased you enjoyed these shots and hope you do get to visit Sri Lanka one day!

Beautiful photos Sarah. I’m amazed at all the different shades of green in the Little green bee eater. My favourite photo is definitely the sunset from Jaffna Fort.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Corna ☺️ I do love bee eaters!
grandmisadventures
great pictures! I love the bright colors of the birds and of course the picture of the elephant 🙂
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Meg 😊 I saw (and photographed) some beautiful birds on this trip!
equinoxio21
Love the kingfisher. Thank you.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you 😀 I took a LOT of kingfisher shots on this trip!
Brenda's Thoughts
A great quote and stunning photos. I especially love the happy monks and the wildlife shots, but my favorite is the one with the lily pads. Gorgeous!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Brenda 😊 It’s always good to know which shots stand out for different people
Rose
The quote is perfect, and the images are a wonderful representation of your February travels.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Rose 😊 I hope they give a good overview of what we saw but there are plenty of gaps to fill in too!
Ritva Sillanmäki Photography
These are just beautiful, the birds and animals, well I really enjoyed them all
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Ritva 😊 You’ll be seeing a lot more birds and animals no doubt, once I get my photos properly sorted and edited!

I would expect so 😁

Thanks so much Anabel 😊 The birds were among my favourite things there!
Suzanne@PictureRetirement
Sarah, thanks for the ‘teaser’ of more to come, and glad you are home safe.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Suzanne 😊 We’re glad to be home too, having flown out of Doha just a few days ago!
Yvonne Dumsday
I know that, wherever you are, you discover interesting subject matter for your photographs but, from perusing over that collection, I get the feeling you must have felt you were in seventh heaven. 😊
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Yvonne 🙂 There was certainly lots to photograph there and it was also very varied which I enjoy!
Alison
Fab photos Sarah, all so different.
I hope you are back home now and not having to fly during this time of turmoil
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Alison 😊 Yes, we’re home now thankfully. We flew back from Doha on Tuesday and could never have dreamt flights from there would be suspended just a few days later!
Alison
Such good timing. My neighbour also came back last week through Dubai. I’m going to wait before I book any trips to Europe for a while.
Sarah Wilkie
Sadly I think you’re wise 😔
Melissa
Absolutely gorgeous gallery! Thank you for sharing a few of your February moments in such a beautiful way.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Melissa 😊

I’m looking forward to reading all about your trip. These photos are a lovely way to start. What model is your Panasonic Lumix? I have a Z110, compact and light but it takes great photos.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you 😊 My bridge camera is a Lumix DMC-FZ330, and I also have a compact Lumix DMC-TZ70 which I tend to use for city photography as it fits into a handbag or pocket. But the FZ330 is much better for wildlife as I can hold it steady on full zoom!
the eternal traveller
I should have said mine is a TZ110. Like you, I find it easy to carry and use because it’s small. Glen has an FZ200. Often if we take the same photo, the colour is a bit better on his. And yes, he gets great wildlife shots too.
Sarah Wilkie
We’re the opposite way around! I like to use the larger bridge camera while travelling at least, while my husband always uses a TZ70 as he likes to be able to take it everywhere with ease 🙂
bushboy
Oh Sarah, your opening photos. Are you trying to seduce me 😁 A fabulous array of beautiful photos. I love the happy monkey, the water lillies and the colourful fishing boats. It took me a while to work out the Tooth Temple photo 🙄
The Lake in Gal Oya National Park was just a black box 🤔
Thanks for joining in The Changing Seasons 😀
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Brian 😊 I’m glad you enjoyed all those photos. A shame though about the Gal Oya lake – it loads OK when I look at the slideshow so I’m not sure why it won’t do so for you 😕

Joanne
Your photos are beautiful! That sounds like a wonderful way to escape winter.
Sarah Wilkie
It was a great escape from some miserable UK weather! Thank you Joanne 😊
restlessjo
That opener is a stunner, Sarah. Lovely snippets of your adventures xx
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Jo 😊 More ‘snippets’ to come!
Monkey's Tale
Beautiful slide show Sarah. We didn’t make it Jafna because of troubles in the area at the time, so I’m curious to see your trip there. Maggie
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Maggie 😊 I’ll be posting more about Jaffna in due course. We only spent a couple of days there which to be honest was probably enough but it was worth going out of our way to see such a different side to Sri Lanka.
Alli Templeton
Looks to have been a great trip, Sarah. Stunning wildlife pictures, and what a privilege to see these beautiful creatures. I absolutely love the little bee eater. I was half expecting to see some stormy weather photos, or is that for another post? Sri Lanka looks lovely anyway, and I’m glad you had such a great time. 🙂
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Alli 😊 I do love bee eaters so you’ll see more of them, but probably not much in the way of storms as the rain was so heavy I didn’t get my camera out in them!
Alli Templeton
Ah, fair enough, I can’t blame you for that! As for bee eaters – yes please! Stunning little birds. 🙂
Image Earth Travel
I don’t blame you wanting to escape UK’s winter and what better place to visit, especially to take photos. A great selection, again!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much 😊

That first shot set the scene. What fabulous shots every one! Though I just want to ask if there’s anything I can do about the fact that in almost every case, I can’t get the whole shot up at once. I either have to cut top or bottom off when viewing, especially in portrait mode. There’s plenty of space for your blog as such on screen, but the ‘page’ your photo is on gets cropped. Is it just me?. I have the same issue with Robert in Hamburg.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Margaret 😊 What device are you using? It probably goes without saying that they look fine to me! If you’re on a PC or laptop, what zoom is your browser set to? If I increase my zoom past 100% I start to lose the edges.
I just checked on my phone too and they fit the page OK if I keep it upright but are a bit small. However if I turn it to landscape format to make them bigger, the top and bottom are cut off as you describe. Again, reducing the zoom helps although I had to go down to 50% to see the whole photo.
margaret21
I never read your posts on my phone: always my laptop, zoom set to the default 100%. I’ll obviouly need to fiddle about. A task for later today! Thanks Sarah.
Sarah Wilkie
My browser is set to 90% but I just tried it at 100% and the photos still fit. And it’s quite a small screen laptop, so I’m puzzled as to why they don’t work on yours. No one else has mentioned this problem although for some reason Sue couldn’t get the arrows to work so she could only see the first image in the show 🙁
margaret21
Technology eh? I’ll give 90% a whirl then. My laptop screen is 30 cm. – quite decent. Thanks Sarah.
Gail Is This Mutton
Fabulous pictures. Fond memories of a holiday in Sri Lanka 23 years ago. You’ve been able to see some areas which were inaccessible to tourists then. Visiting via Natalie the Explorer.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Gail 😊 Glad to have brought back good memories for you. I can imagine the north wouldn’t have been accessible back then, but were other parts also hard to visit?
The Flask Half Full
I’m in love with that little green bee eater!
Sarah Wilkie
One of my favourite birds 😀
Marie
Me too – isn’t he just the cutest little thing! looking forward to hearing more about your trip, Sarah ….
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Marie 🙂 And don’t worry, I’ll be posting loads more once I’ve tackled the mountain of photo sorting and editing!
Anne Sandler
You’ve had a busy month Sarah. Loved your street scene and painted stork!
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks very much Anne 😊 I loved the colours of the painted storks.
isaiah46ministries
I liked every photo. Such colors of the birds. Just lovely to travel vicariously with you.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much – there were so many beautiful birds there 😊
Sue
Lovely image of the kingfisher, Sarah, but sadly that’s all I can see, frustratingly the arrows refused to coòperate….
Sarah Wilkie
Oh dear! What device are you on?
