Juxtaposition: the fact of putting things that are not similar next to each other
Definition from the Cambridge Dictionary
Juxtaposition is often referred to as a literary device, placing two concepts close together to highlight their differences. But it is just as effective in visual arts, including photography.
Patti reminds us of this in setting this week’s Lens Artists challenge. I really liked the quote she chose to open her post:
By carefully placing two different objects or concepts together in a photograph…one is able to create an interesting sense of contrast which, in turn, can elicit a reaction, provoke meaningful thought, lead to a story, or just raise a smile.
Lourens Durand
I’m only just back from Sri Lanka but when I spotted this challenge a few days ago I knew I would want to join in. And I realised when I started hunting for some examples to share that this is something I tend to look for without having realised that I do so. Most of the shots below were taken with an awareness of the contrast in the juxtaposed subjects; indeed it was that very contrast that drew me to take them. And these contrasting elements hopefully work together to elicit a response from the viewer, just as they did from me.
You will probably have seen most of these images in previous posts but they were the best I could find to illustrate this concept! And two are very new, taken on our stopover in Doha.
My feature photo was, like several others below, taken in Paris, in the Bourse de Commerce. Capturing gallery visitors alongside the works of art on display is a favourite subject of mine.

In the Plaza Botero, Medellin, Colombia
This was a photo that just had to be taken, the man perfectly posed next to the sculpture that he so closely resembled!

In Vigan, Philippines
I smiled to see the bike very obviously blocking the driveway, in defiance of the notices

On Mount Paektu, North Korea
I was struck by the contrast between the delicate flower and the rocky mountainside where it had found a precarious home

In Doha, Qatar
Similarly, the soft fronds of the palm tree contrast with the smooth and angular surfaces of the building
In Arpino, Italy
And the smooth shiny car contrasts with the rough walls behind it

The Louvre, Paris
The modern glass pyramid is very different in style to the historic architecture of the rest of the museum, but each acts as a foil for the other
On the Rue de Seine, Paris
The passer-by appears to have elicited a reaction from the sculpture on this gallery poster!

By the Pyramid of the Sun, Teotihuacan, Mexico
I wonder what the ancient people who built these pyramids would make of this modern-day souvenir seller?
In Tallinn, Estonia
My attention was caught by the contrast between the skimpily dressed mannequin and the elderly lady dressed for cold weather and selling woollen mittens

Fontana del Nettuno, Bologna
Another striking contrast, this time between the rather suggestive sculpture and the young boys at its feet
In the Plaza de Armas, Santiago, Chile
A three way juxtaposition here, with the human statue standing below an actual statue while another man turns to look

And finally, another shot from Doha, Qatar
Here West Bay skyscrapers form a contrasting backdrop to the traditional dhows

Very nice contrasts, Sarah. Rue de Seine is particularly good. Remember Doisneau’s ‘Hell’ photo? (It could probably work well in B&W?)
Sarah Wilkie
Many thanks 😊 I might try that photo in B&W – good suggestion!
Sofia Alves
You captured some cool moments that illustrate juxtaposition perfectly, Sarah. Hard to pick favourites this week, they are all exceptional.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much for the lovely comment Sofia 😊

Dear Sarah
We liked your picture from Italy the most.
Thanks for sharing
The Fab Four of Cley
🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much 🙂 That little town in Italy is where my mother-in-law’s family were from.
grandmisadventures
You always find interesting themes and perfectly fitting pictures for them
Sarah Wilkie
Many thanks Meg 😊 The themes come from the Lens Artists team – my only task is in finding the right photos to fit!
Annie Berger
Welcome home! Liked the man in front of the Botero sculpture in Medellin, Sarah.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Annie 😊 That Botero shot seems to be a general favourite!
pattimoed
Great collection, Sarah! You clearly use juxtaposition very effectively. I enjoyed your images very much.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Patti 😊 I really enjoyed this challenge, it was very much my sort of thing!
Leya
Excellent gallery – the man and the poster is hilarious!
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Ann-Christine 😊

Beautiful pictures ! Thank you for sharing
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you 😀

I like the photo of the yellow car against the rough wall in Italy (it almost feels like it’s part of a movie scene 😉). And I also chuckled at the photo you took in Tallinn – that’s a perfect example of juxtaposition!
Sarah Wilkie
I see what you mean about that Arpino shot – there could well be a story here 😀
Jim Earlam
Wonderful pictures Sarah! You have a great eye for people 😀
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Jim 😊 I am always on the look out for a good photo opp!

Love this gallery of juxtaposition images, Sarah! Botero is my favourite.
I’m having issues loading your site, but it may be the WiFi here in Japan.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Nilla 😀 Botero is most people’s favourite it seems. Not sure why you’re having problems loading my site. It did go down briefly yesterday but I think it’s ok now.
Image Earth Travel
Ah, maybe I timed it when it went down as it wasn’t loading on my mobile.
Teresa
My favourite is definitely the bald heads. Love it!
Sarah Wilkie
You are not alone! Thank you Teresa 😊
Anabel @ The Glasgow Gallivanter
The two bald heads are so funny, as are the man and the poster seemingly to interact. Of the non-people ones i really like the dhow in Doha.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Anabel 😊 The bald heads seem to be on most people’s favourites list!
Marie
Absolutely brilliant – and you still jetlagged!!! I love the bald head – well spotted at the time! I’ve a similar photo from Teotihuacan but would never have seen that interpretation….
Sarah Wilkie
Only a little jetlagged tbh – the time difference is just 5.5 hours and we spent a night in Doha on the way back which further lessened the impact 🙂 That souvenir seller at Teotihuacan struck me as rather incongruous at the time, especially as there were no tourists in the immediate vicinity of my shot.
margaret21
It almost as if you knew this challenge was coming up when you were on your travels! Surely this is why you took a shot in the Plaza Botero?
Sarah Wilkie
Well I took that a couple of years ago and I don’t think I was thinking about photo challenges at the time – it simply made me smile and I thought it would have the same effect on others 😀
margaret21
😊
Tina Schell
Terrific response as always Sarah. Your opener is wonderful – good eye! Also loved the Rue de Seine image and the old woman with the bikini mannequin. Some really clever captures perfect for the challenge!
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Tina 😊 This challenge was right up my street as you can see!
Ritva Sillanmäki Photography
Sarah, you have some really good one here. The two bald men gave me a chuckle. The passer-by by the the sculpture on this gallery poster! and of course the last one.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Ritva 😊 I’m glad you enjoyed the post and those photos in particular.
Dawn M. Miller
Wow, these are great!
Sarah Wilkie
Many thanks Dawn 😊
Egídio
So many good examples, Sarah. This is a beautiful gallery. I especially liked the bald man and the old lady images.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Egidio 😊 As I said to Maggie below, they were the first shots I thought of when I saw Patti’s challenge!
bushboy
The people with art or life made me smile the most Sarah, especially the first one 😂
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Brian 🙂 I think that one is definitely the top pick here!
Monkey's Tale
Perfect examples Sarah, love the Botero-bald head and the Old lady and bikini! Maggie
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Maggie – those are two favourites of mine and the first ones I thought of for this challenge 😀
the eternal traveller
I like the real statue and the human statue. That’s a clever combination.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Carol 🙂 I was very pleased to spot that opportunity!
restlessjo
Love that last shot and the yellow car in Italy (for the backdrop) and I smiled at the guy and the poster. Welcome back, Sarah xx
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Jo 😊 Also for the welcome home!
Suzanne
Awesome shots, and clever of you to snap those people shots at just the right moment. Funny, after reading one post about Juxtaposition, I was about to remind myself what it meant, then your post appeared. Thanks for the explanation.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Suzanne 😊 You’re right, it’s the timing that makes these shots work – but I mistime more often than I get it right I suspect!
Suzanne
Don’t we all 🙂
Jane Lurie
These are all so clever, Sarah! The bald heads made me laugh. All your shots are so well seen and most important, timed. And with great humor in many. These are shots that any street photographer would be thrilled to capture. 🙂
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Jane, I really appreciate your feedback 😊
Sue
You certainly have a knack for this, Sarah! The old lady in Estonia, the Serge Schoffel onlooker and the last image were my favourites
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Sue 🙂 You know I always like to hear which images are favourites!
Alli Templeton
No wonder you wanted to join in this challenge, Sarah, you’ve got some superb examples of juxtaposition! I like the ‘or just raise a smile’ end to the Durand quote, because lots of yours did for me! The first one of the two heads in Colombia is an absolute cracker, and I loved the man and the sculpture, seemingly looking at one another, on the Rue de Seine. That would make a such great caption competition – I can just imagine the conversation they’d be having! 😀 All great shots, as always, and they’ve brightened my day no end.
Hope you enjoyed the rest of your trip to Sri Lanka, and that there were no more biblical storms! 🙂
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Alli 😊 That’s a great point about a caption competition – I think a few of these shots could work for that! As for Sri Lanka, we had an excellent time but there were a couple of evening storms towards the end of the trip – maybe not biblical but certainly dramatic!
Alli Templeton
I had to show Maddie and Stuart your pics as I thought they were so brilliant, and they agreed – and about the caption competition, we even had a go at that ourselves! So thank you for bringing much mirth and pleasure to our evening!
Sorry you had more dramatic storms for the end of your trip, but pleased to hear they didn’t dampen your enjoyment of Sri Lanka! 🙂
Sarah Wilkie
Oh, that’s lovely to hear – thank you Alli 😀
Graham Stephen
nicely done!

I am in awe Sarah- not just at your taking these photographs but at your noticing the contrast. I am not sure what spectrum I am on but I am the most unobservant person I know – so, just maybe, this post of yours might make me take more notice in the future. 🤔
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Yvonne 😊 I think I may have said this in the past, but I find that the more I take photos the more I notice good photo opportunities. You can train your eye just as you can train other parts of your body!
Anne Sandler
Sarah, you gave me my morning giggle with your first picture of the heads! The remaining images were “right on!”
Sarah Wilkie
Glad to have given you a giggle Anne 😀
