The highway’s jammed with broken heroes on a last chance power drive
Bruce Springsteen, Born to Run
‘Born to Run’ is a quintessential Springsteen song about a yearning for escape, romance, and rebellion against a suffocating reality. Young people seizing what they believe is a last chance to make something different of their lives, looking for something better than they feel they have at home. And whether they find it or not, isn’t it part of human nature to grasp anything we perceive as a last chance?
You could say that all of life is a series of last chances
Cynthia Voigt, Homecoming
This week the Lens Artists team offer us a last chance, namely the opportunity to share some photos taken this year but not (yet) used in any LAC posts. Of course, being stubborn, I decided to try to find some not used in any previous posts to date. While I did my best to check that, it’s possible one or two have been duplicated, but hopefully not.
I’ve grouped them according to location. The first set were taken close to home in Ealing or in central London. The remaining sets are from this year’s two major trips, to the Philippines and to Svalbard.
My feature photo was taken at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and is part of an installation titled ‘Speculations on Capture’ by Morehshin Allahyari.

And as always with these galleries, click on any photo to open a captioned slideshow. Also, if reading on a phone you may need to open the captions by clicking on the ‘i’ in a circle below the image (see right).
Close to home
This is a somewhat random collection of images from my monthly photo archives that didn’t make it into my regular Changing Seasons post, mainly simply for reasons of room.

The Philippines
The photo below of the sunset in El Nido was included in my Philippines in black and white post but hasn’t been shared in this colour version.

The Arctic
This week’s Last Chance theme has given me a great excuse to share a few more photos of the amazing polar bear encounter we experienced in Svalbard. I took so many that I had to leave a lot on the cutting room floor!
I’ve also included a few landscapes that didn’t make my Arctic diary posts, and some of details that caught my eye but again didn’t make it into any posts about the trip.

I visited the Philippines in February 2025 and Svalbard in August 2025

Oh wow..a polar bear!
That must have been amazing!
Sarah Wilkie
Yes, truly amazing – and incredible to have him approach so close to the ship!
the eternal traveller
A lovely selection. I especially like the moon in shadow and the polar bears.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much – the moon photo was thanks to a guy at our Philippines resort who let me use his telescope to take photos with my phone through the lens, a technique I learned while spotting sloths in Costa Rica a few years ago!
Image Earth Travel
A great selection of images, Sarah! My fave is the food truck, “If you wanna wok wok don’t shoot” – poignant.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Nilla 🙂 That truck caught my eye while wandering around El Nido, which is very much a backpackers’ fave!
Leanne Cole
I don’t understand why these didn’t make the cut Sarah, they are fabulous. Really great images and I’m glad I got to see them.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Leanne 😊 No particular reason I didn’t use them previously, just far too many photos to share them all!
equinoxio21
Excellent. Particularly love:
‘In caffeine we trust’
and the Fez… (Are those coming back?)
Sarah Wilkie
I reckon that’s the only fez I’ve seen being worn in London, or at least the only one I’ve registered!
equinoxio21
That guy must have felt very original.
grandmisadventures
great collection- I read a book that said that Christmas time is all about last chances and miracles, there’s something beautiful about that
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Meg, that is a lovely thought 😊
Sofia Alves
Happy Holidays, Sarah!
Beautiful galleries, Svalbard in particular. I think it suits your photography perfectly.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Sofia 😊 And Happy Holidays to you too!
norasphotos4u
Beautiful gallery!!
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks Nora 🙂
restlessjo
No one can say you haven’t travelled, Sarah, and these are wonderfully representative. A nice eclectic mix. I love that one from the exhibition. It’s intriguing, isn’t it? And I’m always a sucker for a sunset xx
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Jo 🙂 That was an excellent exhibition. I used one photo from it in my monthly round-up, but not that particular shot.
thehungrytravellers.blog
Not been a bad year really, has it 😂
Sarah Wilkie
Pretty good! I’ll do my usual travel round-up in early January to sum it all up 😀
Leya
Always a treat to visit you – so glad to see Svalbard and the polar bear! Happy Holidays and best wishes for the new year!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much, and Happy Holidays to you!
Vicki
Thanks for sharing, Sarah.
I get my ‘travel’ fix from your words and images. I love them and genuinely feel as though I am there, wherever you travel to, with you.
Hope you have an enjoyable holiday season and look forward to viewing some more of your travels in 2026.
Sarah Wilkie
You are welcome Vicki, and I really appreciate your feedback 😊 I hope you have an enjoyable holiday time too!
bushboy
A wonderful gallery Sarah 😀 You can post as many Polar Bears as you want 🐻❄️
Sarah Wilkie
Haha thanks Brian – I may just do that!
Monkey's Tale
Love the polar bears, but alos that quirky bus-restaurant (?) In the Philippines. Maggie
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Maggie 😀 That’s a food truck – could you not manage to see the captions? I tried to make the instructions clearer this time.
Monkey's Tale
Sorry, we’re in Paraguay and my internet is so bad, I have to wait forever for things to open, so I don’t think I tried to read the captions. 😊
Sarah Wilkie
Oh yes, that’s understandable 😀 Hope you’re having a good trip?
Bob Ramsak
Thanks for these – I’m now in search of posts from Svalbard and the Philippines.
Happy holidays to you and wishing you and yours all the best in the New Year.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Bob 😀 There are plenty of those to be found here if you’re interested!
Sue
I so enjoy seeing your images, Sarah, especially as I get to visit virtually places I will never be able to visit in person! That polar bear steals the show on this occasion
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Sue 😊 It seems the polar bear is many people’s favourite!
Sue
So I saw!
Egídio
Your photos always leave me so thankful that I have seen them. This gallery is no exception. That opening shot alone is mesmerizing.
Sarah Wilkie
That’s such a nice thing to say, thank you Egidio 😊
margaret21
All great shots of course, but personally I loved seeing just a few more from that wonderful Arctic trip.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Margaret 😀 I suspect I’ll be dining out, figuratively speaking, on that Arctic trip for many blogging years!
margaret21
And why not? You had such unforgettable experiences, it seems.
Sarah Wilkie
Absolutely!
Amy
What a special series! Love these photos of the Arctic, the polar bears is special!!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Amy 😊 That Arctic trip was the high point of my year!
Tina Schell
I suppose most will think me weird that among all of these beautiful images my favorite is the simple greenery on the white ball. not that I didn’t love every image! And of course the polar bears are wonderful too. Wishing you a wonderful holiday season!
Sarah Wilkie
Not weird at all – I like that photo too, otherwise I wouldn’t have included it! Although having said that, the polar bear encounter was definitely a more memorable event of my year than photographing a wall I pass several times a week 😆 Happy holidays to you too Tina!
Anabel @ The Glasgow Gallivanter
Great photos, but I also loved seeing a quote from Homecoming, one of my favourite children’s / YA books.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Anabel 😊 Yes, I love Homecoming too, and all of her books that I read. I have some on my bookshelves and really must go back to them some day!
Anabel @ The Glasgow Gallivanter
Homecoming is the only one I possess but I read all the Tillerman books at one time. Dicey is such a resilient heroine.
Sarah Wilkie
I have all the Tillerman books, also David and Jonathan, and Tell me if the lovers are losers, which I think was my favourite
Wandering Dawgs
Sarah, these are all amazing! I love them all but the ones of the polar bear are my favorites. What a thrill to see them in person.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Beth 😊 Yes, that was an absolute thrill – a highlight of my year for sure!
Anne Sandler
Wonderful gallery Sarah! I started picking out a favorite, but gave up. Your street photography is amazing and the polar bear is a winner. Thanks for taking us around the world in 2025.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Anne 😊 The polar bear encounter was definitely a highlight of my year!
Ritva Sillanmäki Photography
So many wonderful photos Sarah, you have so much to share from the various places you have visited. Always a pleasure seeing your photos.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Ritva 😊 It’s equally a pleasure getting lovely feedback like that!
