I cannot endure to waste anything so precious as autumnal sunshine by staying in the house
Nathaniel Hawthorne
Today the weather played a trick on us and pretended that it was still summer. The sun shone and the temperature climbed into the low 20s. Where better to take a walk than in one of our favourite London parks? Well, maybe in two parks!
Green Park
We started with a stroll through Green Park. This is quieter than some of the other central parks, with few obvious sights. It’s a popular walking route to Buckingham Palace, but relatively few people linger. However on this balmy autumn afternoon there were quite a few soaking up the sun on its benches or lawns.
One thing may strike you here; there are no flower beds. While other London parks boast beautiful floral displays in their beds, here there are none. It is said that the reason for this is that the wife of Charles II, Queen Catherine, learned that Charles had picked flowers in the park for another woman. In revenge, she ordered that every single flower in the park should be pulled up and no more planted.
I’d hoped to capture some autumn colour for John’s Lens Artists challenge, but it’s still a little early in the season. However perhaps there are enough splashes of yellow and orange in my gallery to qualify.

St. James’s Park
I have always loved this park, with an attractive lake at its heart and wonderful views of some of the capital’s most historic and beautiful buildings. It is the oldest Royal Park in London and was originally a deer park where Henry VIII would hunt. Later Charles II commissioned a redesign and opened the park to the public. It is said that he was himself a frequent visitor, feeding the ducks and mingling with his subjects.
And while you almost certainly won’t meet our current monarch here, you will see plenty of other people, tourists and locals, walking and relaxing in this green haven in busy Westminster.

As we entered the park today, near Buckingham Palace, we were greeted by a bed planted with colourful backlit cosmos flowers.

We walked around the lake, stopping to photograph the birds and attempting also to capture the lively squirrels. You aren’t supposed to feed the wildlife here, by the way, but people regularly ignore the signs.

There’s a café with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating right by the lake at its eastern end, so we stopped for refreshments. No cake, Jo, but instead (probably) the last ice cream of the summer!

I visit these parks often; all these photos were taken in October 2025

Ah, le charme de l’automne…
Sarah Wilkie
Absolutely, although in the spell of miserable wet weather we’ve had in recent days it is considerably less charming!

I imagine. Here, thankfully, the rainy season seems to be over…

Oh, it’s difficult for me to choose between autumn and spring, but I think autumn wins by a small margin because I get serious hay fever during spring. Lovely photos of a beautiful autumn day in the UK … and ice cream (that’s the best)!
Sarah Wilkie
I can never decide between them either. I used to say autumn but these days I lean slightly more towards spring I think.
grandmisadventures
Beautiful pictures. This is my favorite of time of year when the colors start popping
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Meg 😃 I can never decide between spring and autumn as a favourite season!

How lucky you are to have two marvelous parks so close by to walk around and photograph to your heart’s content, especially near the middle of October, Sarah. I love the swan photos!
Sarah Wilkie
Absolutely 🙂 Green Park is about 30 minutes by Tube from home and we have Kensington Gardens, which are also lovely, slightly closer. Glad you liked the swan as I had to wait quite patiently for him to pose so nicely!
Marie
How lovely – I particularly like the colours in Green Park…
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Marie 🙂 Green Park had a bit more colour but St James’s is my overall favourite because of the lake, water birds and views!

What a nice day this must have been! A lovely late summer day is a beautiful occasion for a walk in the parks, where the first glimmerings of Autumn are beginning to show. I like your skill in framing and taking photographs. They’re all so warm and enticing. Good work!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Joanne 😊 It was such a lovely day!

It’s a bit warmer than usual here too, Sarah but most of the trees have already turned and it feels a bit strange 🙂 Green Park looks lovely and the cosmos are to die for.
Sarah Wilkie
Funnily enough the trees in our local suburb seem to be ahead of those in central London, but the colours are a bit stronger every day. Today there’s a chill in the air but we have some lovely sunshine. Glad you like the cosmos, I was really struck by them 🙂

London’s parks are wonderful, we should all be proud…
Sarah Wilkie
Yes, definitely one of our capital’s best features 🙂

Lovely, serene photos, Sarah and the Nathaniel Hawthorne quote is so apt for this post.
It’s great to see green spaces still in London, and I hope it stays that way as land prices keep going through the roof.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Nilla 🙂 I can’t see the Royal Parks being built on at any time, having been there for centuries, whatever the value of the land.

That’s a comforting thought!

Two beautiful parks you picked, Sarah. Yes, I can see fall colors beginning to show. Beautiful photos!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Egidio, I’m glad you enjoyed seeing these parks 🙂

Lucky you catching the tail end of summer! And getting such beautiful photos from it.
Sarah Wilkie
The joys of not working these days – when the sun shines we can take advantage of it 😀 Thanks Anabel!

Exactly!

Some lovely mellow autumn leaves, Sarah! I love that image of the streetlamp in front of the autumn-coloured tree…puts me in mind of a park in Spain yonks ago… love the fact that you visit London’s parks fairly regularly
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Sue 😊 Glad you like that shot and it’s interesting that it reminded you of a park in Spain as to me it seems quintessentially ‘London’!
Sue
Only a little reminder!
Tanja
Beautiful photos
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Tanja 🙂

There’s something really magical about sunshine through autumn leaves, isn’t there? Love that first swan photo and who can resist feeding squirrels? The roast chestnut men are on the streets here but the temperature still high 20s. Thanks for sharing, Sarah xx
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Jo 😊 Yes, I loved seeing the sun through the leaves, and through those cosmos flowers. I’ve not spotted any roast chestnuts here yet but I’m sure they’ll be arriving soon.

Autumn may not be flashy in your place, but it is lovely and mellow. Your photos catch that well
Sarah Wilkie
Mellow is a great word for our autumns, thank you 🙂
Rebecca
Fall is finally showing itself, evidently in the leaves in London! Here in LA, it’s finally starting to cool down, although it still hovers around 24°C for most of the week…really in the need for cooler weather, and I’m glad it’s being reflected in your part of the world, Sarah! Thanks for sharing the gorgeous autumn foliage 🙂
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Rebecca, and I hope you get the cooler weather over there soon 🙂
Monkey's Tale
What a great way to spend a warm summer day. Love all the water birds. Maggie
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Maggie 🙂 It was warm for autumn though I suspect if it were really still summer we’d have been commenting on the slight freshness in the air when in the shade! The lake here is known for its birdlife and there are always plenty to see and photograph.

Lovely autumn in the parks of London Sarah. The trees, the swans and especially the flower…..beautiful
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Brian 😊 Glad you like the swans and flowers as I was pleased with how those ones came out!
the eternal traveller
We’ve walked through both these parks every time we’ve been in London and it’s always amazing to have such beautiful green spaces in the middle of the city.
Sarah Wilkie
It is a wonderful resource for the city – we can walk from Kensington Gardens in the west almost all the way to Westminster Abbey without leaving the parks other than to cross a couple of roads 😀
Tina Schell
Lovely choices Sarah – all beautiful but the streetlamp in front of the autumn-colored tree is my favorite. Speaks to me of days gone by.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Tina 😊 I do like the way that traditional-looking lamps like these are still used in our parks and in much of London.
Teresa
Yes you can’t. Love autumn in your part of the world. Hope to go back in a few years.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Teresa – I hope to meet you here one day 😀
Teresa
Hope so too Sarah!
Wandering Dawgs
Thanks for showing me some of London’s beautiful fall colors. Your photos are beautiful.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much, I’m glad you enjoyed them 🙂

You’ve given me a proper dose of homesickness, Sarah. London’s parks occupy a little part of my soul and to see these familiar sights, pictured so recently, makes me wonder if I might be able to pop back for a cheeky visit over the Christmas period. Hmm. Great animal and flower shots, and lovely to see those initial autumnal splashes. I’m sure it will be out in full force before too long.
Sarah Wilkie
Oh dear, I didn’t mean to make you homesick! But I do know what you mean about London parks, there’s definitely something special about them. I hope you manage that cheeky visit! Thank you Leighton 🙂
