Hark, now hear the sailors cry,
Smell the sea, and feel the sky,
Let your soul & spirit fly, into the mystic.
Van Morrison, Into the Mystic
Who hasn’t been mesmerised at times by the sight and sound of the sea? Watching the movement of waves, whether on the shore or from a ship, can be almost hypnotising, or so I find.
I’m keeping it simple this week with a selection of shots all taken from the balcony of our cabin on the Ocean Explorer on our recent Svalbard expedition cruise. When the ship was on the move between our various calling points I enjoyed standing there looking down at the icy waters below. And of course I took photos, trying to capture the movement of both ship and waves. A selection of the more successful of these images seemed a good fit for Leanne’s Monochrome Madness theme this week.
For some of these shots I used a shutter speed fast enough to freeze the water droplets in the waves. For others I used a slower speed to blur the water and emphasise the sense of movement. Some of these have a semi-abstract feel that I liked.
I edited them all with Nik Silver Efex Pro, using a selenium tone to add to the watery feel.

I tend to get seasick … and while I was looking at your photos, I was glad I wasn’t with you on the ship (but on the other hand, I’m glad you’re sharing it with us, because it’s actually so mesmerizing).

I think you’d have been OK on this voyage. A lot of the time we were close to shore or inside the fjords, and we only really felt the movement of the waves on a couple of nights. An Australian man we got friendly with was very prone to seasickness but managed fine 🙂
Annie Berger
I could almost ‘feel’ myself on the ship with you, seeing those waves, Sarah!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Annie, that’s just the effect I wanted to create!
Leanne Cole
Wonderful images for movement Sarah, I can also imagine how cold it must have been.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Leanne 😊 Not too cold at this time of year – mostly between 3 to 8 degrees but on one crazy day we had +16!
Amy
Great captures! Excellent in bland and white.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Amy 😀

Such dramatic and atmospheric shots!
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Margaret 😊 I’m not sure why your comments are popping up in the middle of the conversations, but I really appreciate you taking the time to backtrack through my recent posts!

Oh sorry, that’ll undoubtedly be my fault. Late-visiting of posts seems to be an art I haven’t acquired!
Sarah Wilkie
🤣😘

Great pictures- the black and white seems perfect for catching the movement
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Meg, glad you liked the effects 😊

Yep, could watch it for hours. Well that’s how it feels anyway. Funny how we’re always drawn to the back of a boat to watch the wake, isn’t it? Mesmerising is the word 😃
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Phil 🙂 I guess it’s the wake that gives us the strongest sense of movement and progression, especially in an empty sea with no shoreline to measure ourselves against? Also the photographer’s favourite of leading lines! From this balcony we could look straight down at the formation of the wake as the ship cut through the waves 😀

I enjoy watching the wash of boats as they plough through the water too Sarah. I so like this set of photos 😀 I find the second last one the most intriguing
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Brian 🙂 I can imagine that you would be more drawn to the more abstract ones given your own experiments with water!

I must admit my mind was thinking of what I could do with some of the photos Sarah 😁
the eternal traveller
I know that feeling well, standing on your balcony looking out over the ocean and watching the movement of the water.
Sarah Wilkie
It was a wonderful experience, we really enjoyed the opportunity to take some photos from there as we were relatively low in the ship and therefore closer to the water 🙂

I cam almost here the roar.
Sarah Wilkie
Glad you got that effect Dawn 🙂
Rebecca
The shape of water, the ocean, the sea is very hypnotic. Great photos!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Rebecca, I’m glad to have ‘hypnotised’ you!

It’s a wonderful set, Sarah, and yes, I can be transfixed too. I was happy with a much gentler swish on the beach today. Warmer too! The drama is all there but I have to wonder how much is added in processing xx
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Jo 🙂 Nothing added in processing apart from the monochrome edit and in a couple of them a slight boost to contrast. Oh, and one was cropped as there was too much glare from the sun!
restlessjo
They’re beautiful xx

Great creativity Sarah and excellent photos.
