Transportation is the center of the world! It is the glue of our daily lives. When it goes well, we don’t see it. When it goes wrong, it negatively colors our day, makes us feel angry and impotent, curtails our possibilities.
Robin Chase, American transportation entrepreneur, co-founder and former CEO of Zipcar
When was the last time you used some form of transport? Car, bike, bus, train, plane … Most of us can’t get by without at least one of these. And wherever you go in the world, while the choice of transport might vary, people are on the move.
For Dawn’s Monochrome Madness theme of transportation I’ve compiled galleries of different forms of transport from around the world. There may not be many that are very conventional, as this isn’t a subject I’m naturally drawn to unless I spot something unusual. That could be an historic vehicle or a quirky detail. Or it could be a candid shot of people making use of the transportation.
Because I find this subject matter less interesting on the whole, I’ve played around with these shots even more than I usually do! So after using Nik Silver Efex to convert them to monochrome, I’ve added a vintage filter from Color Efex. For anyone else using these filters, almost all were done with filter numbers 2 or 3, a couple with number 24. And yes, I know that will mean nothing to most of you!
My feature photo was taken at Bodie State Park in California. Clearly this truck isn’t going anywhere soon!

Great collection Sarah, I really the header shot.

Thank you Leanne 🙂 Bodie was great for monochrome shots!
Vicki
That vintage filter is fantastic. Love your choice of images for this theme.
Sarah Wilkie
It’s very effective yes, but I have to be careful not to overuse it! Thank you Vicki 😊

Great pictures! Vehicles and planes really do so great in black and white
Sarah Wilkie
Many thanks Meg, I’m glad you like them 😀
Annie Berger
You’ve chosen a great assortment of vehicles to highlight the theme, Sarah.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Annie 🙂 I decided to pass on trains and planes as on the whole I find them even less interesting!
Amy
This gallery is fascinating! I love the buses, trams, and trucks.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Amy, so glad you liked it 🙂

What a lovely collection, I absolutely love vintage photos!😍
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Tiffany – I do like playing with these vintage effects 🙂

I love how you gave the photos a bit of ‘atmosphere’! The boats are beautiful, and I also like the truck (somewhere in Rajasthan) with the many people on it.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Corna 🙂 Both the boats in general and that specific truck photo seem to be favourites this time!

Wonderful editing – I especially like the boats
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Nora, I did have fun with these 🙂

A fabulous collection. My favorite is the government car in India. It’s so simple.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks Egidio, glad you like that one – it was a fun thing to spot!

These are wonderful galleries. Your boat gallery has an exceptionally different edit. It makes me think of an old time post card.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Dawn 😊 These vintage filters do seem to mimic those old postcards I think, especially with the pale lens fall-off.

I think I’ll stick with my car Sarah! I loved all your photos, but they help me appreciate what I have right here at home!
Sarah Wilkie
Ha ha, I know what you mean Anne!

The photos feel nostalgic, rather than modern to me which is very cool. I love that pickup truck!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you, I’m glad you think so, as I was aiming for that sort of look 🙂
Sue
Great set! multi passenger truck in Rajasthan had me thinking back to the trucks we saw in Cuba!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Sue 🙂 I guess in less wealthy countries it’s the norm to get as many passengers into a vehicle as possible, and even in wealthier ones (thinking of Tokyo, or the London rush hour!)
Teresa
Wonderful choices, Sarah. I just noticed one photo that had father and child plus one person riding at the back that looked like a ghost haha
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks Teresa 🙂 That ‘ghost’ is the mother! It’s the custom for Rajasthani women to wear fine veils covering all of their head. If you saw it in colour it would make more sense as an image perhaps?
Teresa
Oh I see. I get it now, when I enlarged the photo. Sometimes it’s difficult just by using the phone. Thanks Sarah,

These are fabulous Sarah 😀 Wonderful ships and I love the buses
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Brian, so glad you liked them 🙂

Well, you’ve certainly made something fascinating from a non-too-appealing subject. In a crowded field, that multi-passengered truck in Rajasthan is something I’ll carry in my head for the rest of the day!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Margaret 🙂 You must have seen sights like that on your own visit to India?!
margaret21
Well, yes. But that one takes the biscuit!
