Art is not a reflection of reality, it is the reality of a reflection
Jean-Luc Godard
What is better than seeing a beautiful landscape captured in a photograph? Often, seeing the same landscape twice. A still lake, or if we’re lucky a still river, will allow us to double up the scene and often double the beauty.
We can also have fun, as I did with my feature image taken in Yosemite Valley, and include only the reflection. This can mess with a viewer’s eyes and make them look twice! Only the pebbles ‘in the sky’ give away the fact that you are looking down into a river.
But we aren’t restricted to water when we look for reflective surfaces to enhance our images or give them a different twist. Mirrors of course are reflective, as are windows. And if you keep your eyes open you will find other less obvious options: a well-polished car perhaps, or a pair of sunglasses, or maybe a modern sculpture.
The trick is to be aware of these opportunities and look out for them. We probably all notice a beautiful reflection in a lake, but do we miss others? Many are only obvious from certain angles, so we may need to adjust our position to get a truly reflective photo. Get down low to capture a reflection in a puddle. Shoot from an acute angle to capture one in a skyscraper’s windows. And so on …
Anne is asking us to share such images for this week’s Lens Artists challenge. Earlier this year I took part in a Monochrome Madness challenge with the same theme. I thought it would be interesting to use some of the same images from that post and to follow the same format. But I haven’t ‘mirrored’ that post completely as some images work better in colour, some in black and white.
Some reflections in mirrors
Some reflections in windows
Some reflections in water
Some random reflections
Refractions
Finally, a few refraction shots. Refractions aren’t the same as reflections as we see the image through the shiny surface, not bouncing back at us from it. In a refraction light shifts its path as it travels through the material, causing the light to bend and the image to distort, often appearing upside-down.
But they have a similar appeal so I thought I’d throw a couple in! One you will probably have seen before; it’s an old favourite from the Town Hall Pharmacy in Tallinn. The other two were taken with a lens ball in my local park. A reminder that I should take this out more often!

These are all wonderful – you always have the eye, Sarah! Tallinn and Docklands are my favourites.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you for the lovely comment 🙂 But please leave your name in future as it doesn’t always come up – I have no idea who you are!
Annie Berger
I also enjoy taking shots of reflections, Sarah, but have never seen as many as yours, congrats! I wonder what your favorite is – mine was the second Docklands one. It was fun, too, reading where each shot was taken!
Sarah Wilkie
I think most if not all of us enjoy finding reflections to photograph. I couldn’t pick a single favourite here – to some extent they’re all favourites as I selected them from among many others I could have used! But I’m rather pleased with that opening shot from Yosemite and the rushes in the Okavango, as well as the Docklands one you mention. Thank you Annie 😊
Annie Berger
I so understand how you become partial to all the photos you take, Sarah. However, it’s fun to know which ones are your particular favorites!
Sarah Wilkie
Oh no, by no means to ALL the photos I take, many are duds and many others just OK! But I usually pick out favourites to share here 🙂
Annie Berger
You’re right of course. I meant to say that you’re partial to the ones that make it to the blog, or, at least I am!
Heyjude
Some very interesting shots here Sarah, I love the puddle reflections and also the one in Kyoto garden – what actually is that? You obviously keep your eye out for a good reflection! And hasn’t everyone taken a photo using the wing mirror? (Except me as I am the driver).
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Jude 😊 The Kyoto Garden shot is of a bubble in the pool, caused by the small waterfall churning up the water a bit.
Heyjude
Well spotted.
Sofia Alves
Canary Wharf is a favourite this week, Sarah. I love all the angles and reflections, it’s juts great fun! A wonderful gallery, I always enjoy your posts.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Sofia 😊 I had fun playing with that one, trying to get as many versions of me as I could in a single shot!
Ritva Sillanmäki Photography
So many wonderful and creative reflection shots, I am not even going to try to choose a favorite one.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Ritva 😊 I love to find out which ones are people’s favourites but I know myself how it’s sometimes hard to choose, so no pressure at all to do so!!
Ritva Sillanmäki Photography
good, your photos are always great. So I could easily pick anyone
Leanne Cole
These are fantastic Sarah, I really like the reflections in the buildings.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Leanne – I always enjoy looking for reflections in buildings, especially if I can contrast old and new styles of architecture 🙂

Wonderful and varied selection of these reflection and refraction photos from your travels, Sarah! I happen to love reflection photos and yours are very special as always! I captured what I thought was a very special one from my latest trip! It will have a prominent place in a future blog!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you for this lovely comment, though I do wish you’d included your name so I could know who left it 😀 Maybe I’ll spot a special reflection in a friend’s blog one day soon and realise it must have been you!
grandmisadventures
Great pictures of reflection and refraction:)
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Meg 🙂
Amy
Great selections! Thank you for showing us various reflections! Love these refraction shots!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Amy, so glad you liked them 🙂

As you rightly said, one just needs to be more alert to notice reflections in unusual places (something I can remember). The photos from Norway and Botswana are beautiful, but I also enjoy the uniqueness of your refraction photos.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you, I’m so glad you like the refractions too 🙂 The more you look for things like this, the more you see them I think!
Image Earth Travel
South Iceland and the Norway shots are my favourite.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you – it’s always good to know which shots stand out for people 🙂
Image Earth Travel
I find it intriguing what people select as a favourite.
Sarah Wilkie
I do too, especially when different people choose different shots!
Steve Hyde
These are excellent Sarah. I love the clever use of those mirrors and puddles 🙂
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Steve, glad you like them 🙂
I. J. Khanewala
I like the traffic mirror shots, perfect for what my youngest niece calls reflies
Sarah Wilkie
Haha, that’s a fun word 😂 And yes, they are good for those, though I prefer to focus on the landscape rather than on myself 🙂
norasphotos4u
Gorgeous and varied reflection photos. I think I’m partial to the water ones
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you Nora 🙂 Most people seem to favour the water shots and I agree they are the most attractive on the whole.

You’ve got some beauties, Sarah. I think the abstract or those requiring more time to work out are my favourites.
Sarah Wilkie
I’m not sure who you are, but thank you 🙂 Glad you enjoyed the more abstract shots!

Good stuff! Funnily enough, on our last morning in La Paz (Friday just gone) there was a superb reflection of blue sky and fluffy cloud in the glass of a multi floor high rise nearby. When I saw it, I said to Michaela….”Look at that reflection, Sarah would be all over that”. And then you do this post 😂😂. And yes, I caught your humour in the “no parking” shot too.
Sarah Wilkie
That’s quite a coincidence, and yes, I would almost certainly have been ‘all over’ it! I hope Michaela took a photo? Glad you picked up on the no parking sign, you’re the first to do so 😂
thehungrytravellers.blog
Yep, she sure did…
Egídio
Phenomenal reflections. I loved the glass reflections and, especially, the water reflections.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Egidio, I’m very happy you liked them 😊
JohnRH
Wowwww. (I’m saying that often this theme, but it’s true.) Outstanding selections, all. LOVE that header shot.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you so much John 😊 I’m especially glad you liked the header!
Tina Schell
Wonderful set as always Sarah. Must admit I had to go back and re-look at the opener after reading your text. That is spectacular!! Also really loved the London dockyards image.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Tina 😊 I hoped to fool a few people with that opener, so I’m quite glad you had to look twice!
Joanne
Really splendid images, Sarah! All so creative. I loved all but especially the landscape reflections in water.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Joanne, I’m glad you liked my landscapes in particular 🙂
Wandering Dawgs
Sarah, wonderful collection of reflections! Thanks for explaining the difference between a reflection and a refraction. Great post!
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Beth 😊
margaret21
What a grat collection. I particularly love that very last mirror shot. Very enigmatic.
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks Margaret 🙂 I had good fun with that installation! The mirrors were above my head and I tried to get as many reflections of myself into a single shot as possible!
margaret21
I SEE! I was trying, somewhat unsuccessfully, to ‘read’ it,

Great selection of photos as always, Sarah! And though they fit into the genres you explore, they are each, on their own, beautifully unique!
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much 😊 I think this is Sylvia, judging by the email address?
Anne Sandler
You shared a great set of reflections Sarah. And thanks for clearing up the difference between a reflection and a refraction. I knew the glass ball didn’t show a true reflection, but didn’t know what it was. You learn something new every day. Great post. Thanks.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Anne 😊 I remember checking info about refractions back when I took that Tallinn photo, ten years ago now!
PR
Great collection, Sarah! The one in the bubble (is it?) in Holland Park is extra special..
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you 🙂 Yes, that’s a bubble created by a small waterfall.
photobyjohnbo
A wonderful collection, Sarah! I hadn’t thought about the difference between reflection and refraction. Point well taken. I’ll likely include a lens-ball photo in my set on Thursday.
My favorite, though, is that row of houses in Trondheim.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you John 😊 That row of houses in Trondheim gave my friends and me some wonderful reflection shots. They were taken quite late in the evening when the city was light for almost 24 hours (it’s just too far south to have proper Midnight Sun).
Vicki
What an amazing collection of reflections, Sarah. I love the one of the grass in Botswana and the homes in Norway.
The ball in Ealing with those beautiful Autumn shades in the background is a stunner too.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Vicki 😊 You’ve picked out some of my own favourites, especially the grasses in Botswana!
Sue
brilliant selection, Sarah! I do think I like the water ones best but they are all excellent examples
Sarah Wilkie
Ah, just spotted you here too Sue 😀 Thank you again!
Anonymous
Fabulous selection, Sarah! I think on balance that I actually like the water ones best, but all are great for this post and quite educational I think
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you 🙂 I wonder who you are, however? Please, if you see this reply, let me know, and include your name in future if not logged into WP!
Sue
It’s me, Sarah and I was locked in!
Sarah Wilkie
Oh, WP can be so frustrating at times! But good to be able to put a name AND a face to the comment – thank you 😀
Sue
😄😄🥰
Alli Templeton
This is a spectacular collection, Sarah, and what a wide and varied exploration of the subject. It makes me look at reflections in a whole new way! All superb shots, as always, but I love the last three, with the reflections in the glass (?) balls. I found them quite moving, in a strange way. It’s as though the spherical object represents the Earth in miniature. Absolutely beautiful! 🙂
Sarah Wilkie
Thanks so much Alli 😊 Those last three shots are refractions rather than reflections. Two of them are made with my lens ball, which is great fun – when I remember to take it out!
Alli Templeton
Ah I see. They’re incredible, so please remember to take it out more! 😉
Teresa
I so enjoyed your collection, Sarah. My favourite is the reflection on water set.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Teresa 😊 I think water reflections are probably the loveliest, on the whole!
Brad M
Really enjoyed your reflection on photography. I even recognized a few locations.
Sarah Wilkie
Thank you very much Brad, glad you enjoyed this 😀
