Gallery: pick a word (March 2024)

The whole point of taking pictures is so that you don’t have to explain things with words

Elliott Erwitt

I am late contributing to this, one of my favourite challenges, this month. My excuse is a busy Easter weekend which coincided with the end of the month. My March highlights post took precedence, and this one has consequently lagged a little behind. But I’m sure Paula won’t mind!

As always I haven’t stuck only to Paula’s five words, as I like to tell you a little bit about each photo. However I do try to be more succinct for this challenge than for most of my posts!

This month my photos will take you to Botswana, North Korea, Vietnam and two of the United States, New Jersey and Washington.

FLOATING

Small boat with colourful paintwork near a rocky beach

Fishing boat in Bai Tu Long Bay, Vietnam

Our ‘Halong Bay’ cruise actually spent more time in neighbouring Bai Tu Long Bay. It looks very similar to, and just as picturesque as, Halong Bay itself but fewer boats go there. Although we certainly didn’t have it to ourselves, there were more local fishing boats than cruise boats.

OVERLOOKING

Military tower and buildings on a low hill

Looking from North Korea across the DMZ to a South Korean guard post

And of course while North Korean soldiers keep a very close eye on their neighbours, their South Korean counterparts do the same. You should just be able to make some out to the right of the central tower.

PRECOCIAL

Brown and white sea bird eating from a large shell

Young gull eating a horseshoe crab, Higbee Beach, New Jersey

This beach on the western side of the Cape May Peninsula, facing Delaware Bay, is a magnet for birders. When we visited a lot of horseshoe crabs had been washed up on the sand, providing the gulls with a feast.

ROSY

Pink sky reflected in a lake with reeds

Sunset in the Okavango Delta, Botswana

I’ve shared this photo before but to me this sky is the very definition of ‘rosy’!

SEEDY

Our second day in the park was rather foggy, so I concentrated mainly on macro shots of the wild flowers and grasses.
