    Gallery: three flowers, three fruits

    June 16, 2022 / 30 Comments
    Three bright red flowers

There are always flowers, and for those of us in the northern hemisphere, especially at this time of year. Is there a photographer anywhere, I wonder, who doesn't want both to see them and to capture them forever?

    Gallery: building in threes

    May 13, 2022 / 23 Comments
Three large highly decorated buildings around a central square

According to Sherlock Holmes, 'There must be something comforting about three. People always give up after three.' Hopefully this isn’t true of architects and builders; we would all be very short of homes, schools, offices, etc. etc. if they were to give up after three!

Black wrought iron lamppost with three lights

I always enjoy photographing beautiful street lamps, so for Thursday Trios this week I had a trawl through my archives to find some in groups of three. While I was about it I discovered some other lighting threesomes too. So here’s small gallery of lamp trios, indoors and out.

Why erect one monument when you can erect three? If something is worth commemorating then let’s make a big impact by tripling up!

Three colourful painted wooden birds and some strings of beads

Once you recognise that groups of three are visually among the most interesting photographic subjects you can find, you start to look for them everywhere. But they aren’t always easy to find. Having participated a couple of times in Mama Cormier’s Thursday Trios I was keen to join in again. So on our recent trip to Costa Rica I kept my eyes open for possible threesomes.

Gallery: when three is better than two

    January 21, 2022 / 49 Comments
    Lioness followed by two cubs

It's said that two is company, three a crowd. But when taking wildlife photos I’m always happy to have a third animal join the shot! Designers have long recognised that an odd number of items is more effective at capturing your gaze. Odd numbers force your eyes to move around the group and that forced movement is the heart of visual interest.

Gallery: taking on a new challenge

    January 14, 2022 / 34 Comments
Three men in white with colourful turbans

Is there room in my blogging life for a new challenge? Possibly not, but when I came across Thursday Trios I was intrigued and decided to see what I could find in my photo archives. Today it is all about people. Finding them in groups of three isn’t always as easy as you might think. Couples are common of course, as are larger groups, but threes less so.
