Around the world in ten photos: day two
Flamingos feeding
The landscape here is a series of horizontal stripes in blue, green, beige and brown. It creates a calm backdrop for the flamingos as they feed, their pale pink feathers reflected in the still pools of water.
Margaret of From Pyrenees to Pennines and Teresa of My Camera & I have both invited me to join them and other bloggers to post one favourite travel picture a day for ten days without explanation, then each day, nominate someone new to join in on the same terms. I don’t usually post a single photo on my blog; I like to tell a story. But for this challenge I’ll resist that temptation and instead play a guessing game with you all. So, does anyone know where these flamingos are feeding?
And the answer is, the Laguna Chaxa in the Salar de Atacama in Chile, an otherworldly landscape with heavily salinated lagoons in an otherwise dry desert.
I realise not everyone likes to be nominated for this sort of thing so there’s no pressure to join in. But I wondered, Bert and Rusha of Oh The Places We See, if you’d like to have a go? Don’t feel you have to but do link back to this post if you do – I’d love to see your photos!

Another lovely photo but can’t pick where your flamingos are. Not where we have seen them – the Yucatan and Cuba. Both times in late winter when they were obviously full of shrimp – their plumage glowing peach. Brilliant seeing them in their natural habitat like this.

You’re right Lesley – this isn’t either the Yucatan or Cuba (I haven’t been to the former and didn’t see any flamingos in Cuba!) There were hundreds in this spot but all this paler pink, not vivid. I believe that’s due to the nature of the food here.

The colour does depend on the food – beta-carotene in shrimp, algae . We saw them near Cienfuegos in Cuba..Bolivia?

Getting closer – you’re on the right continent!
We stayed a few days in Cienfuegos but I don’t recall any flamingos. Maybe it depends on the time of year? We were there in March I believe. Or maybe we just didn’t go to the right place!

We were there in late Feb (March in Mexico a few years back). Laguna Guanaroca, just a 20 minute taxi ride from Cienfuegos.
